I Hate Building Train Track

I am the world’s worst train track builder. It takes me forever to build one, and I am always getting myself in situations where I have to undo a bunch and redo it…last week I actually got so frustrated I went to Toys “R” Us and dropped twenty bucks on adapter pieces of track because I can’t just BUILD A TRACK! Adapter pieces are the ones that have two “male” ends or two “female” ends. So you can use Thomas the Tank Engine to give your kids the “Birds & the Bees” talk one day or something.

Anyhoo.

I hate building train track. When Joshua asks me to build one, I do it begrudgingly and with much “harumphing”. I think about all the things I could be getting done while I am wasting my life away building this stupid track that he will play with for five minutes and then take apart.

But man, is it gonna suck when he stops asking me to build them. He can already build good tracks himself…but he still likes to watch Mommy and Daddy do it. One day, he’s not going to want to sit with me while I build a track. And another day, he’s going to be too big to want to play with trains anymore.

That’s really why I bought the adapter track, I guess. So I can hang in there with him a little bit longer. So I can watch him jump up and down while I build and listen to him tell me what a great job I’m doing. So I can see his little face light up when he gives that new track it’s first test run. So I can hear him make up his own story about Thomas “puffing down the line”.

Why do I hate building train track again?

I seem to have forgotten.

  1. awe he is too cute.. funny my nephew was big time into that train track stuff but then my son came along and wanted NOTHING to do with it! weird.

  2. My son loves his trains, too. On one visit his grandpa and him started using our play kitchen dishes to raise the track up so it could cross over the other track. Now, we almost always have to have a bridge when we build. Not as easy as simple tracks.

I really enjoy the time hanging out with my son, too. I like seeing him figure out how to build different configurations on his own. You can definitely see how he has progressed from simple ovals. Now, he just builds any configuration, which means some joints aren’t so smooth because they are at a slightly off angle. We experience a lot of train derailments.

  3. Sweet… I’ve never built a train track in my life – but maybe that’s what lies ahead when my baby boy gets a little bigger…

I’ve also been meaning to ask… it used to say right under the post title “posted by jenny” or “posted by emily”, but it doesn’t show up anymore. Any idea why? It always takes me reading a couple of paragraphs before I figure out who’s talking. No big deal, but just curious. 🙂

  4. it reminds me of that country song(i don’t really listen to country) i don’t know the name or who it is but is is about how your going to miss those days when they were little. it goes something like “your gonna miss this” it makes me cry…. and then i feel stupid because i am crying over a country song

  5. Ahhhh – Joshua is very cute! And that’s very sweet that he says encouraging things to you during the construction! Claire is only 10months, and my husband keeps saying that she’s not a baby anymore, but a little kid now. I would like to kick him.
