Lopsided

I am having two distinct problems on different sides of my body.

(This is why I often refer to myself as functionally retarded.)

Little baby Jonah has decided that he only wants to eat off of my left side when nursing. About once a day I can con him into eating pretty well off my right, but that is not going to cut it!  I don’t want to be grotesquely lopsided, and I don’t want my right side to dry up!!

To complicate this matter, my left thumb injury (which makes my whole left arm hurt) is pretty painful at the moment and since Jonah ONLY wants to eat off the left side…it’s not as easy to “rest” my left arm (which is a joke anyways, I mean really, I kind of need both hands and arms at this point in my life.)

So.  When my left arm withers up and my right breast dries up…I am going to be one lopsided- looking mother!

I want to go on “Extreme Makeover: ‘I’m just Jacked Up’ edition”.

But seriously, how do I solve this nursing problem?  I swear I’ve got the same flavor coming out of both sides!!  Any advice??

  1. Silas did this for awhile and it sucked. Or did not suck as the case may be. I learned to start him on the side he liked and then try to fake him out by quick switching to the other side. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. It seemed to be a phase that eventually he grew out of and then from time to time he would get picky about which boob he wanted again. I am sure there is a more medically sound answer than that, but that is what worked for me.

  2. yeah. I was thinking football hold. Or even laying down with him to see if it helps. I fed twins football hold forever! It was crazy! Totally missin those days though, 🙁 I miss little babies

  3. Do you ever pump? What if you just pump on the right side and store that milk so that you don’t dry up until Jonah decides he isn’t picky????

  4. when my babies went on strike, i would just pump on the side they didn’t like in the mean time. or i’d wait until they were really hungry and desperate enough to eat on either side! (or too sleepy to notice what side they are on)

  5. MY BABY BOY DID THE SAME THING. HE FAVORED ONE SIDE MORE THAN THE OTHER. YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP OFFERING IT TO HIM AND HE WILL COME AROUND.

  6. Both of my babies were the same way! Right after I had them, I had no problem nursing both sides; I think because my hormones were in such overdrive then… but after they got the hang of it, they didn’t want the right side. I nursed them both almost exclusively from my left side, and did that successfully until about 8 months, until they got too ‘busy’ to nurse… I pumped what I could from my right, but after a while, I was only getting 1-2 oz. out of it, and it just wasn’t worth it to me.

BUT if you are still getting milk out of that one, go for pumping and bottle feed him, or create a great stockpile! With Lydia, I had over 500 oz. in the freezer at one point in time. Next time I have a baby, I’m going to pump even more crazy so I get a HUGE stockpile….
