Oh, the Gosselins.

Stop by our house at any given time of the day, and I can tell you what will be on television. We no longer hear Dora screaming talking about her latest adventure, and even the refrain “You get the best of both worlds” isn’t as omnipresent as it once was. No, what you’ll hear coming from our tv is this:

“It all started with the two of us. Then we had our beautiful twin girls, Cara and Madelyn. We were so thrilled, we decided to try for just one more and ended up with six.”

Jon and Kate Plus 8. TLC’s hit reality series about a couple who has twins and sextuplets. Kate (my Kate, not the show’s Kate) is obsessed. I am not exaggerating, obsessed. And the funniest thing? Andy and I love to watch it, too. It’s the first show that the three of us have all actually enjoyed.

It is an interesting show… just watching how a family with eight kids manages to do anything is fascinating. I mean, can you imagine cooking for all those kids? Going to the grocery? Taking them to the dentist? Let alone taking plane trips to Utah and driving to Disney World. (Did you hear that, Jenny? Eight kids at Disney! I know that’s your idea of heaven).

A few weeks ago, there was a special episode in which Jon and Kate answered questions that many viewers had, including something I had always wondered about – where are the grandparents? Kate’s vague answer about how some grandparents are involved and some are not and theirs are in the “not” category didn’t satisfy my curiosity, so of course I Googled it.

And, as sometimes happens when we Google things, I learned more than I wanted to know.

Apparently there is a movement going to try to have the show taken off the air. People are concerned for the kids and feel as though it’s an invasion of their privacy… some even calling it child abuse. There’s a blog that is dedicated to disecting every detail of the show and reading all sorts of things into it… a little over the top, if you ask me. Not even (my) Kate is obsessed enough with the show to watch it with the sound off in order to assess the family’s body language.

Learning about the controversy surrounding the show has taken an edge off my enjoyment, that is for sure. I can really see both sides of the story – I can understand the concern for future consequences that the kids might face for having every moment of their lives caught on videotape. I think that’s something that all of us bloggin’ mommies have struggled with to some degree. And Jon and Kate are definitely profiting monetarily from the show, but really I’m not sure that is cause for condemnation. Can you imagine trying to feed and clothe eight kids on one income? Why not ride this wave while it’s here?

I also wonder if some of the criticism is simply because viewers don’t like (the show’s) Kate. She’s tough and straight-talking and OCD. However, if I had eight kids you would find me under the covers curled up in the fetal position sucking my thumb. So I can understand why she is a bit stressed at times. But it does make me wonder if she is treated so harshly because she isn’t Mary Poppins.

So basically, I don’t know where I stand. I want to give Jon and Kate the benefit of the doubt and to believe that they have the best interest of their kids in mind. But, I don’t want to participate in the exploitation of children either.

So, readers, what do you think?

Snot Fun in the Summertime

Last week my hubby was out of town for work. He rarely goes out of town but every time he does it seems like something goes wrong! First, the sink clogged up, but fortunately some Drano cleared that up. Then, the next morning, Joshua woke up with a fever and MAJOR snots. He was sneezing out gobs and gobs all day long. The poor child would cover his nose when he sneezed and literally end up with a hand FULL of yellow snot. Aren’t you glad I shared that with you? Of course the next morning, Thursday, Sophie woke up with it also. Sadly, she is unable to catch snot in her hand at this stage, so I had to change her outfit multiple times due to it being soaked with snot and drool (she is also teething really hard.) We went through two boxes of tissues in two days. Sophie slept horribly and I got very little rest. That bottle of Drano was starting to sound very tasty again.

Friday, they both seemed markedly better. Their noses were drippy but it was clear and their fevers were gone. So we set out to join my husband, who had by now returned to the general vicinity, and his siblings, nieces & nephews, at his dad’s cottage on Kiser Lake, about 35 miles from our home, for what I like to call Family Vacation 2: Electric Boogaloo. Every year on this weekend my hubby and father-in-law run a sailing school for their sailing club. (See photos on my Weekly Winners post). So we all get together and have a big family reunion. Joshua and Sophie had a great time playing with their cousins. Joshua spent the night there with Bobby but Sophie and I drove home since we are both terrible sleepers away from home. We returned Saturday for more family fun. Then, Saturday night on our way home, Sophie started to cough quite a bit. When we got home, I thought she felt warm and took her temperature. Sure enough, she had a fever. ARGHH! Sunday morning she woke up with one of her eyes sealed shut with goo and the yellow snot flowing a-fresh. So, we had to miss the big family festivities at the lake and stay in all day. I know it is just a cold and she will be fine (and thankfully she has not been very grumpy except when I wipe her nose, which is still sore from her July 4th boo-boo), so I am not really worried about her, as much as I am annoyed at missing out on fun stuff and being cooped up with her. Which of course I then feel guilty about!! I had to cancel a playdate last week with a friend I haven’t seen in over a month, and tomorrow I have to cancel another one with Sophie’s future husband and his mama, which I am extremely bummed about. BLERG!!!!

Today my little Sophie is still very snotty and coughing, but no fever. Perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Bobby and Joshua will be home today also. I cant wait to see my boys and have another adult to converse with, at least until Bobby goes back to work tomorrow.

Blecch. Summer colds are the worst. It’s not so bad being cooped up in the winter, but I am snot having fun indoors on nasty nose duty in the summertime!

CVS Deals Matched with Competitor Coupons, July 13-19

The deals are a bit better this week, and there are a couple that go great with competitor q’s. Here we go!

Benefiber, Excedrin, Maalox, or Gas-X buy $20 get 10 ECBs
There are $2 off q’s for the Maalox, Benefiber, and Gas-X in the Walgreens ES Catalog
There are also manufacturer’s q’s out for these prodcts, however I could only find the Benefiber ones, so I am not sure if we got all of these in our area. There are $2 off printables for Excedrin Migraine here (you can print two.) I checked today, and prices for Excedrin start at $4.79, Benefiber at $6.99, Gas-X at $5.29, and Maalox at $5.99. With these coupons and the new CVS $3/$15 q, (click on view PDF)you can get a great deal on these products! CVS has also been printing CRTs for Excedrin and Gas-X. I got one for the Excedrin. Woo-hoo!

Skippy peanut butter B1G1 Free
Price is $2.89. Use two $1 off Skippy q’s from the Target printable site and get two jars for 89 cents!! That’s a GREAT deal!

Colgate toothpaste is B1G1 Free this week also. I forgot to to look at the prices today, so I will have to update later. NOT that we need more toothpaste, but this could be a great filler as there is a coupon making Colgate Total $1.99 in the Walgreens weekly ad this week (might be cheaper than the CVS price – I will let you know!) – so you have the potential to get both free PLUS overage if you use a manu q (printable here for $1.50 off Total, plus there were some in the 6/29 SmartSource). There is also the $1/1 Colgate Total q from the Target site and a $2/2 q in the Walgreens EasySaver catalog. So, depending on how MANY competitor q’s your CVS will let you use, you have the potential for overage. I think I might try using the Walgreens in-ad q with the Walgreens ES q and see if I can get $2 overage.

If you see anything I missed, leave it in the comments!! Don’t forget to check out Money Saving Mom and The Centsible Sawyer for other great CVS scenarios that DON’T involve competitor q’s – there’s free plus overage Sally Hansen nail polish to be had this week!! Have FUN!
