Picture Perfect

Last week I embarked on a project to finally get our digital pictures organized and to print picture books. I had purchased a groupon for a photo book, and I planned to do one per year for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Here’s the problem. Our pictures are completely disorganized! Well, that is the main problem. Other problems include the fact that our camera is CRAP and therefore so are all of our pictures, and also if you looked at our pictures, you would think my husband is a single dad (who takes his kids to do really fun stuff) because their mom is nowhere to be seen! AND, it became clear to me that we don’t take nearly enough pictures. The everyday moments are the important ones, and that’s what we miss (other than what we catch on our cell phones, ha).

Anyway, back to the disorganization. First of all, our pictures are spread out among at least four computers and three online archives. They are not all in one place. And frankly, I’m sure I forget where some of them are. Also, they are in no particular order, the file names are meaningless, and there are a dozen terrible pictures for every good one.

After a ton of work, I finally got the last couple of years organized on Flickr, and grouped into sets and collections. However, there are more where those came from! And I know Flickr isn’t a good long-term solution, and I need to have them backed up on something that’s in our possession.

I know it sounds silly, but this whole thing is causing me some serious anxiety, so always, I am turning to all of you smart people!

How do you organize your digital photos?

How do you back them up?

How do you print/display them? In actual old school photo albums, photo books or do you just let them live on your computer?

How do you weed out the bad pictures?

How do you make sure you are capturing your kids’ childhood on film and/or video?

I think this all boils down to that last question. I am terrified I am letting our memories disappear.

2010 Recap

2010 has been QUITE a year here at Mommin’ It Up, and we thought a fun way to look back on it would be to join in with Jo-Lynne’s recap blog carnival at Musings from a Housewife. The instructions are to post the first sentence of your first blog post of each month. This could get interesting! Here we go…

January So like all the other bloggers in the world, we’ve put together a post highlighting our favorite posts of the year.
Apparently we were a little slow on the uptake last year and posted our 2009 recap after 2010 already started, but this post highlights what we thought were the most memorable posts each month of 2009. It was fun to look back on it – there are some very funny stories involving elevators (and more elevators), Spanx, Lysol wipes and much, much more.

February It’s BlissDom week!
We were *a little* excited about heading to Nashville for Blissdom 2009… and don’t worry, you’ll be hearing plenty more about that conference because it is in like four weeks and we’re going! And taking a 5-week-old baby so needless to say, we are going to have very bloggable experiences.

March Yesterday I logged onto Twitter and found this tweet from Jenny: @jennyitup I just realized I owe @momminitup $25 from December. Umm…I’ll get that too ya real soon…
Hey Rapson, did you ever pay me that $25?

AprilOne night last week, Kate and I had a very difficult time during dinner.
And what do you know, all these months later she is still a super picky eater.

May One of my little Sophie’s very favorite things to do is play with my iPod touch.
Sophie was showing off her vocal skills!

June I don’t know what my problem is… I’ve the blues.
Well that was rather depressing. Yikes.

July Well, my poor third child is probably feeling neglected already.
Once again Jenny regales us with tales of puking.

August The Ultimate Mom’s Night Out party was last Thursday and it was AMAZING!
Jenny took a break from throwing up long enough to throw a great party with Tricia, and I got to come and everything!

September On Monday, my Kate went back to school.
Ah yes, the post about all the things I did wrong in preparation for Kate going back to school. Click through if for no other reason than to find out why I taped a car to her chest.

October By the time you read this little post, I will be in Orlando, FL getting ready to take part in [the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon]
I warned you all of my possible impending death upcoming half marathon. I lived, but barely. And I haven’t run since.

NovemberYesterday was a red-letter day in our house.
Sophie showed Jenny what she’d been learning in school – backtalk. And Jenny was thrilled!

December So, I am 36 weeks!
December brought us another pregnancy update – and of course, baby Jonah as well!

2010 was pretty amazing. Happy New Year to all of you!

It’s New Years Resolution Time

It’s that time again – the time of the year when 93% of Americans (I am totally making that up) make the New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Again. If you’re in that category (and I have been 93% of my life!), I highly recommend checking out Weight Watchers.

As you may know, I am a huge fan of Weight Watchers. As a lifetime member, the program worked for me and I recommend it to everyone. So, I was thrilled when I was asked recently to become a “Weight Watchers Insider,” which means I will be helping to get the word out about the new Weight Watchers PointsPlus program.

The PointsPlus program was just launched in November, and it is the first time in many years that Weight Watchers modified their points system. Needless to say, it has taken the WW community by storm – some people were initially worried about having to learn new points values, and others were in the “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” mentality, but from what I can tell, the majority of people are really happy with the changes, especially once they find out the reasoning behind it.

Weight Watchers has long focused on portion control, and the PointsPlus program is no different, but it also encourages making solid nutritional choices and encourages choosing whole grain carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables.

The biggest change? ALL fresh fruits and most vegetables are zero points. ZERO.

I personally think that change is huge for a number of reasons. First of all, it just makes sense. No one ever got fat eating apples! There have been times when I’ve seriously debated eating a piece of fruit because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend the points, which when you think about it is pretty silly. Also, I think it helps mentally to know that if you’re hungry, you have all sorts of options to choose from that won’t count against you. The reason WW decided to make this change, though, is that they’ve discovered that the way the body responds to these foods is different than the way it responds to empty calories. It takes more energy to digest a high-fiber food than it does to digest simple sugar. Not to mention that those kinds of foods keep us full much longer!

With the change in points values of the foods come changes in daily point allowances as well. Though fruits and vegetables have decreased in point values, other food has increased. To balance that out, the daily point allowance has increased as well. My allowance, for example, went from 20 to 29 points per day, and even if that roughly equals out to the same amount of food, it makes a difference psychologically. To me, at least, managing 29 points a day SEEMS so much better than limiting myself to 20.

Over the next few months, I’ll keep you posted on the latest Weight Watchers news, as well as how it’s going for me personally. One thing I’m particularly interested in sharing with you is their new iPad app. I haven’t tried it out yet, but I think it’s going to be a great addition to the Weight Watchers tools.

Until then, if you’d like to learn more about Weight Watchers and their PointsPlus program, check them out on Facebook or on Twitter (search #weightwatchers and #pointsplus) and make sure to join in the conversation!

Disclosure: I was provided with an ipad and accessories with which to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own, and are in no way influenced by anyone else. Weight Watchers earned my undying love and devotion long before the iPad, I promise.
