Holiday Giveaway Bash: Win a 13-piece cookware set from Better Homes and Gardens!

We’re at it again – this is the first of TEN giveaways we’ll be posting today and tomorrow… stay tuned, you don’t want to miss any of them!

I don’t know a lot about cookware (although I am learning!), so when I go to buy it, I always look for a brand I recognize. Few brands are more recognizable (and affordable) than Better Homes and Gardens – and we’re giving away one of their Non-Stick Hard-Anodized 13-piece cookware sets!

The set includes:
— 1.5 QT covered sauce pan
— 2.5 QT covered sauce pan with steamer insert
— 4 QT covered dutch oven
— 8.5 inch skillet
— 10 inch skillet
— 8 QT covered stock pot
— 4 QT covered deep skillet.

I have to say, out of all of those pieces I was most excited about the stock pot! In my (perhaps a little too thorough) recent kitchen organization spell, I got rid of the three stock pots I had. All of them were awful, and the last time I made mac and cheese in one of them there were black flecks in the food. YUCK. However, I have discovered that stock pots are pretty much a necessity around the kitchen, so I was thrilled to receive this high-quality one!

I was also intrigued by the dutch oven. I wasn’t sure what it was for, so of course I googled it. It turns out you can use it for just about anything. I am going to use it to try out a new family favorite – chicken tortilla soup.

Better Homes and Gardens also offers cookware in tri-ply stainless steel and non-stick porcelain enamel.

Review: Happy Blankie

When I first heard about Happy Blankie, the thing that stuck out to me is that they are designed by a child. What mom doesn’t want to support a child-preneur! (yes I made that word up.)

Happy Blankies were dreamed up by 10-year-old David Holdridge, who wanted to combine his little sister’s two favorite things (stuffed animals and blankets) into one. With a little help from his mom, Happy Blankies were launched!

In addition to being adorable, Happy Blankies are incredibly soft. They’re well-made and are something I’d feel good about wrapping around my little one! The backs are satin-y, which is a texture that most kids seem to love. They’d make great baby shower gifts!

Better yet, you’re doing good by purchasing from Happy Blankie. From the company:
Happy Blankie’s mission is “one to love, one to give” and for every blanket purchased, a second blanket is donated to a child in a hospital or orphanage. Happy Blankie works with organizations around the world and will be doing Blankie Drops every few months to children in need of comfort.

Comforting children in hospitals and orphanages? I can’t think of a more important mission.

Review: It’s Movie Night!

Our family loves movie night – there’s nothing better than snuggling up and watching a great movie or show (and eating treats, of course!). Over the past few weeks we’ve had the opportunity to check some new ones out, and I wanted to share them with you!

Kate and I enjoyed watching “Harriet the Spy, Blog Wars” together. Kate knows Jennifer Stone from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” so she was excited to see this movie. It’s about two girls (Harriet and Marion) who are competing to be their official class blogger, which I thought was awesome because I only wish there was an official class blogger when I was in school! It’s a cute story with a good lesson, and is entertaining for the whole family. Perfect for family movie night!

A movie with a familiar character, “Marmaduke” is a cute movie about a family who moves into a new neighborhood with their giant dog. Needless to say, the dog gets himself into all sorts of situations, which makes for a pretty funny movie.

I must admit that I did not watch “Glee” during its first season. All I knew about it was that it was about a high school glee club… and that every time it was on, it was all people could talk about on Facebook and Twitter. And now that season one is out on dvd, I can see why. I was hooked at the first episode! The band geek in me could really relate to those kids, and everyone loves a show you can sing along to!

Modern Family is without a doubt my favorite show on television. My husband and I look forward to it every week, and we absolutely crack up at every episode. The show depicts a family that is not, uh, traditional, and it is both hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. If you don’t watch it, you MUST get season one on DVD and then start watching season two on television IMMEDIATELY. If not sooner. You can thank me later.

I’m always on the lookout for great movies and shows – what are your current favorites?
