Interview with Teen Mom’s Chelsea Houska

A couple years ago, I wrote a post about a TV show I had seen called “16 & Pregnant.” I’ve been a regular viewer since then, and I’ve also faithfully watched the spin off, “Teen Mom.” Several weeks ago, I got a PR pitch that caught my eye – an opportunity to interview one of the teenage mothers, Chelsea Houska, whom I highlighted in my original post. The show gets very mixed reviews – some people think it shows teen pregnancy for the difficult thing it is, others think having a show about it glamorizes the subject. I was curious to hear the opinions of someone actually on the show, so I set up an interview with Chelsea.

The first thing I asked Chelsea was regarding that same subject – critics of the show. Her response echoed how I feel about it – she feels the show depicts teen parenting how it really is, and doesn’t make it look easy or glamorous at all. Like Chelsea pointed out, those girls spend a lot of time crying. We’ve also seen how Chelsea struggled with balancing school and being a mom, and we’ve seen her grow up a lot. Chelsea’s situation is better than many girls on the show, in that she is very close to her parents and they are a wonderful support system for her. Even still, though, it’s tough and her life has changed dramatically since becoming a mom.

I was also curious about the impact the show has had on Chelsea’s daughter, Aubree, who is about to turn three. Chelsea says Aubree loves talking to people and likes the attention. It’s going to be weird, for sure, when Aubree gets older and sees the footage, though. Much like how when my kids get older, they are going to read this blog and think I am a complete nutcase. But I guess we’ll both cross that bridge when we come to it. I asked Chelsea how she would feel if Aubree wanted to be on a reality show one day, and she said she’d be supportive, although she would warn Aubree that there’s a lot of criticism that comes with it.

If she had the chance to do it all over again, Chelsea says she would definitely still have done the show and that overall it’s been a great experience. I guess I was a little surprised to hear that (although Chelsea’s story has not been a train wreck like certain other reality stars who may or may not have eight kids), but I was really glad to hear that it hasn’t been detrimental to her life. Because if it was, I’d feel like I had to stop watching, and that would be very sad.

Chelsea’s a smart girl with a wonderful family, and I’m sure she and Aubree will flourish in the future. I enjoyed talking with her, and it was great to get an inside view of Teen Mom.

What are your thoughts on shows like this? Do you watch them? Would you let your kids watch the show, if they were at an appropriate age? Do you think the shows warn against teen pregnancy or glamorize it?

P.S. In case you were wondering (and I certainly was), Chelsea reports that she and Adam aren’t together and haven’t been in a while. Hallelujah.

Happy 35th Birthday, Jenny!

Since Jenny LOVES pictures of herself, I thought I’d post my personal favorite.

Today is a momentous occasion – Jenny’s 35th birthday!

It is hard for me to believe that Jenny’s 35, because that is soooooooo old it seems like JUST YESTERDAY that we were celebrating her 30th birthday, right here on this blog. Which means we’ve been doing this for a long time. Blogging, I mean. We’ve been celebrating her birthday much longer than that.

I love giving Jenny a hard time (my favorite topic right now are the pictures she posts of her FACE – have you seen them? Lord have mercy. The girl loves her some make up. And also her face.), but I can only get away with that because she knows how much I love her. We talk/text/IM/tweet/FB just about constantly, and I don’t know what I’d do without her.

I could do without all the pictures of her, however.

Just kidding! I love you, Cousin.

Please join me in wishing Jenny a very happy 35th!!

Pin for the Wednesdays: Cupcakes!

Welcome to Pin for the Wednesday! Today’s edition is going to be picture-free, because, well, I forgot to take any. But – it’s about cupcakes, so you forgive me, right?

Last week my kids decided they wanted to bake cupcakes, so of course I turned to Pinterest. My food and drinks board is 40% cupcakes and 60% cocktails, so the problem was not finding a recipe but choosing one. One that contained only ingredients that were currently found in my house, I might add. This one fit the bill – a basic chocolate cupcake from Annie’s Eats. I didn’t have sour cream, but I did have plain Greek yogurt so I used that. They were REALLY good. Andy and the kids ate theirs plain, and Andy declared it the best chocolate cake he had ever had. I also chose Annie’s recipe for cream cheese icing. I loved it (my kids scraped it off, which I consider a travesty), but now that I look at it I am fairly certain I used 8 oz of cream cheese instead of 10. Oops.

I also discovered the following day that the butter AND cream cheese I used had expired in approximately March. Oops. I didn’t die, though, and as far as I know, the neighbors we gave the leftovers to didn’t die either.

Speaking of leftovers, we had lots of un-iced cupcakes left, and I didn’t want them sitting around waiting for me to eat them, so I did a little google research and discovered it’s perfectly fine to freeze cupcakes. I wrapped them in plastic wrap and froze them until later in the week, when it was my turn to bring the Friday afternoon treat for my office.

I thawed out the cupcakes and whipped up some of this salted caramel frosting from Life on Blackberry Farm.

Oh my lord, people. This stuff was good. Looking back on it, I don’t think I cooked the caramel long enough, but that was my fault. My co-workers loved it and I may or may not have eaten it out of the bowl until I forced myself to thrown the rest down the drain. I’d definitely make this one again.

In case you were wondering, I bought brand new, unexpired butter for this one. However, cream cheese was not to be found in our little down and so I once again hoped for the best. So far as I know, everyone is still living.

This post would be a lot more exciting if it had pictures! And food poisoning. Just kidding!
