Our Holiday Gift Guide – Big Kids Edition

Are you ready for part 2 of our Holiday Gift Guide? This time we’re bringing you gifts for “big kids” – school-agers if you will. Hope you find something that would be perfect for your kiddo! Once again, either Emily or I were sent one of these to review and this guide is full of stuff we liked and think would be a great gift for your big kiddo.

Gifts for Big Kids

Heelys

heelys

Heelys Skate Shoes are the super-cool roller skates-and-shoes in one. They are an awesome gift for big kids who want to get around a little faster. Joshua saw my niece with a pair of these on a couple of months ago and about died from envy. These are a super-hot and fun gift your big kid can enjoy all year round.

I Spy with My Little Eye

I spy

This is truly an ingenious idea! There are dozens of objects hidden in this bag for kids to find. Great to occupy your school-agers in the car, a waiting room, or anywhere you need to entertain them – quietly. And Emily’s daughter Kate LOVES hers. (Oh hi, Emily here. I just had to jump in and say that this is the best invention EVER for church, the doctor’s office, anywhere you need to keep your kids occupied and quiet. It’s challenging and fun, even for adults! And based on our experience sitting next to one of Kate’s friends at church on Sunday – buy one for every kid in your pew!)

Learning Resources Funny Phone

funnyphone

The Funny Phone is another game to keep big kids busy. It has 9 different challenges and over 300 questions to encourage silliness and learning at the same time. The Funny Phone will always be asking something different so it never gets boring. This is a great activity for your kids to do together or with friends! (Or even with YOU!)

R2D2 Play-Doh

playdohr2d2

For any budding Star Wars nerds fans, this R2D2 Play-Doh set is the perfect mix of creative play combined with a favorite Star Wars character. (How can you not love R2D2? Come on!) Kiddos can make a light sabre, smush Play-Doh through R2’s head, and much more! It comes with several cool tools as well.

Easy Bake Oven and Snack Center

easybake

Another classic toy that brings back great memories, but it updated for today, is the Easy Bake Oven and Snack Center. Your kiddos can learn the joy of baking – and – this is what I like – it makes such small, appropriate-sized portions, so the whole family does not have the opportunity to gorge themselves on cake. PLUS it’s really fun to feel like a big kid and bake REAL snacks and learn about safety while baking!

Candy Land Sweet Celebration
candy land sweet celebrations
We love family game night, and Candy Land is a classic that is always a hit. This new version is no exception. A 3D board, new characters, and new adventures give one of our favorite games an exciting twist.

Spongebob Cranium
spongebob cranium
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants! Everyone’s favorite sponge now has his very own board game – Spongebob Cranium! It’s designed for older kids (8+) and combines the multi-activity fun of Cranium with the hilarity of Spongebob. And it even comes with Crabby Patty clay.

Scatterpillar Scramble
scatterpillar scramble
This game is new this year (or at least it’s new to me!) but I think it’s going to be a popular gift this year. The object is to get the marbles in the caterpillar’s (or callapitter, as Kate likes to say) hands, as the bug wiggles and dances. It’s not as easy as it looks! This game is fun for the whole family.

Giraffalaff Limbo
giraffalaff limbo
How low can you go?? If you’re me, the answer is “not very.” But my kids, they are seriously flexible! This is another new game from Hasbro. The spinner will tell you if you can do a regular limbo, or if you have to get creative and go under the giraffe doing a crab walk or backwards, or some other crazy way. This one is definitely for the kids, but if the grown-ups insist on playing, make sure you’ve got the video camera handy.

FashionPlaytes
fashion playtes
This is one of the most creative gift ideas I have seen in a long time! Give the little fashionista in your life the chance to design – and wear – her very own creation. Start by choosing a garment (they have everything from jean jackets to dresses to headbands) and pick a pattern, adorn it with ruffles, lace or jewels, and your very own creation will be delivered to your doorstep in about three weeks. How fun is that? Fashion Playtes gift certificates make fantastic presents!

i-Dog Soft Speaker

idog

The i-Dog is a toy that delights kids and cracks parents up. This cuddly pooch can be plugged into any music player or headphones and will groove to the beat of the music, while amplifying it through its built-in speakers. He’s got lights, jacks for your devices, and a even a little pocket to hold them. This is a very fun toy for your music lover.

Crayola Camcorder

crayola camcorder

The Crayola Digital Camcorder is perfect for your budding movie-maker. It’s sturdy design can handle a kid’s touch while he or she learns to take video. It has a 1.5 inch LCD screen and comes with editing software to turn videos into movies. This is a great big kid learning toy!

Hello Kitty MP3 Player
hellokitty
My daughter loves her “iPod,” and it’s a great way for everyone to listen to what they want to in the car! This Hello Kitty MP3 Player has three changeable face plates, so your big kid can show her own personal style, and hold up to 1360 songs or 64 hours of music! It also comes with super-cute heart-shaped ear buds.

That wraps up our BIG KID gift guide. Did you see anything you like? Stay tuned for gift guides for Mom, Dad, and baby as well as some awesome giveaways in the next week!

Our Holiday Gift Guide – Little Kids Edition

Only 39 days until Christmas! Are you counting down yet?? This year Emily and I decided it would be fun to be like, well, everyone else in the blogosphere and bring you a Holiday Gift Guide of some of our *favorite things* for you to give or put on your wish list! Today we’ll bringing you some great gift ideas for the little kiddos in your life! Either Emily or I received a sample of these products to review and keep – but no cash exchanged hands. 🙂 Are you ready? Here we go!

Here’s a short video of my Joshua and Sophie demonstrating my FAVORITE kids product on our gift guide this year: a custom super hero cape and tutu from Cutie Pa Tutus! Check out the cuteness!

As you can see, Joshua’s cape has a “J” for Joshua. Sophie’s tutu has jingle bells on it that she loves. You can build your own Cutie Pa Tutu or choose from many of their pre-made designs – what a great gift!! Both my kids love to dress up and pretend so they have had a lot of fun with these. Sophie’s tutu also came with a Poofy Pompom magic wand that is adorable and lots of fun for her to cast her sweet spells with. These items are a really sweet, special gift! Cutie Pa Tutu is offering a special deal for Mommin’ It Up readers – get $8 off all capes and $5 off all tutus in the store until Nov. 30th. You can redeem this offer by sending an email to info@cutiepatutus.com.

The rest of our kids gift guide we’ve broken into age groups for your convenience!

Gifts for Little Kids

Baby Alive Whoopsie Doo
whoopsiedoo

I am particularly excited about this little doll because it “goes pee and poop” when you “feed” it – and I am really counting on it to get Sophie interested in the potty! Because I cannot seem to get her excited about pee & poop, I am hoping Baby Alive will take care of that for me! It’s a cute little doll and it kicks, cries, and wiggles! Great for your little girl who loves to play “mommy”.

My Little Pony So Soft Sleep & Twinkle Star Song

mylittlepony

This is another great gift for your pre-schooler who loves to pretend. I loved My Little Pony when I was a girl and I am so glad they are back! This baby Star Song is a great friend for your little one to cuddle with! She talks and sings, and comes with several accessories for your child to use to care for her.

Strawberry Shortcake Berry Cafe Play Set

strawberrycafe

Another character I loved as a child is Strawberry Shortcake. (Perhaps you’ve seen the famous picture of Emily and me in our matching Strawberry Shortcake outfits!) Sophie got her first S.S. dolls this summer and I’m so glad she can enjoy them as much as I did as a girl. This play set is lots of fun – little girls can help Strawberry Shortcake make smoothies in her cafe and can put her to bed in her home above the cafe when her day’s work is done!

Learning Resources Melody Express

Melody Express

This fun toy combines two of my kids’ favorite things – music and trains! Your kiddo can be the symphony conductor and the train conductor at the same time. The engine plays music when it chugs clockwise and is silent when it chugs counter-clockwise and comes with 44 musical note tracks!

Green Toys tea set

tea set group

Pretend play is huge in my house right now; I love to see Sophie playing with her toy kitchen and dollhouse. Pretend play is being made even better by this tea set from Green Toys. Green Toys are made in California with recycled milk jugs as the main material! How cool is that?? Eco-friendly toys made in the USA that help our kids grow and learn. I love it!

Holly and Hal Moose from Build-a-Bear Workshop

Holly MooseHal Moose

Holly and Hal Moose are back at Build-a-Bear this Christmas! These cute moose come in many different variations or you can create and dress your own. I love these two in their “Winter Adventure” outfits pictured above. They’re a great Christmas tradition gift for a little one. When I was little one of our local department stores came out with a different version of the same teddy bear every Christmas season -we always had to have one! Holly and Hal are the next generation’s holiday stuffed toy for kiddos to collect!

Bear Hands

bearhands

This is actually a gift that is available for big AND little kids – but I like to “give” my little kids things they NEED for Christmas! And Sophie needed a good pair of mittens, and these are GREAT. Not only are they cute and fun with the bear paw design, but they are really, really, warm, lined with waterproof Thinsulate, and they stay on really well. Plus, there are matching hats and scarves available to complete the warmth and cuteness. Love these!

Mega Bloks Build’n Go Table

megabloks table
We love Mega Bloks at our house, and this new table is a great way for little ones to enjoy them. It comes with 22 colorful pieces, including a bridge, a truck and a boy. The legs of the table fold for storage and portability, and the blocks can be put away under the tabletop make for easy clean up and organization. Love it!

Yo Gabba Gabba DJ Lance Boombox
yo gabba gabba boombox
Speaking of Mega Bloks, make sure to check out the Yo Gabba Gabba DJ Lance Boombox. If your child is a fan of the show, he will love this! Characters sing and dance, and like all good Mega Blok products, kids can build the stage any way they want to. All the parts fit inside the boombox for easy storage, which means Mom will love it as well!

Chuck My Talking Truck
chuck my talking truck
This is bound to be a hot toy this season for the little guys! Chuck says more than 40 phrases and sounds, and get this – he drives to you when you call! This is a great interactive toy, and toddlers will love loading up Chuck’s truck bed. It’s made from soft plastic and is bound to be “loads” of fun.

That wraps up our little kids edition of our holiday gift guide. Stay tuned this week and next for gift guides for Big Kids, Baby, Mom, Dad, and anyone else on your list. We’ll have some great gift guide giveaways to go along with these that you won’t want to miss, too. Happy Holidays!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Sophie Girl

Three years ago today, my Sophia Diane entered the world at 7:31 a.m.

I was very anxious at the end of my pregnancy. I just wanted her out. I couldn’t wait to meet her! I knew she’d have lots of hair. And she did not disappoint! From the moment she was born, people commented on her hair.

When she was about three weeks old, it started sticking straight up.

It finally got heavy enough to lay flat when she was about 6 months old.

Then it turned blonde!

And got really, really long. Maybe because her mommy can’t bear to cut it.

Her hair is usually the first thing people notice about her. And it is beautiful! I’ve even written more than one post about it.

So, anyhoo, girl’s got a beautiful head of hair. It’s kind of her thing.

Of course though she could be completely bald and she’d still be the most beautiful girl in the world to me. She’s my baby. And I can’t believe she’s three.

At three Sophie is much more independent than she was a year ago. But she still lets me know that she loves me and wants to spend time with me. Being home with her all day is truly so much fun. I love it when she talks to me in her sweet little voice, sings along to her favorite songs, “reads” her favorite books to me, and quotes entire scenes from her favorite TV show, “Word World”. I love her sweetness, her stubbornness, her smile, her touch, and her silliness. I love the way she’ll prance around in a tutu while playing trains. I love the way she ALWAYS tries to climb UP a slide instead of going down. I love the way she asks me “What happened?” or “What’s wrong?” when she wants ME to ask HER those questions. I love the way she always tries to get me to give her Cheez-its for breakfast. I love, love, love, love being her mommy.

So Happy Birthday, Sophie girl. You’re my favorite girl, my sweetheart, and an amazing gift from God. I love you and I am so proud of you!
