Shoppin’ it up at my happy place: CVS

This Shoppin’ It Up series is sponsored by CVS Extra Care. The content is 100% originally my own, as is my big love for all things CVS.

Mommin it up and CVS ExtraCare

A quick stroll through the archives of this blog will show that I love coupons and drugstore deals – I mean, you guys have seen my post pictures of my deals about a million times – and it’ll show you that my first savings love? Is CVS. You guys know that about me, but do you know about how I found CVS? Perhaps not – and I’d love to tell you.

Six-and-a-half years ago I walked into a CVS with a few coupons and a sketchy plan. I had read about their ExtraCare program on a blog and I was looking to see if I could put it to work for my family’s budget. That night, with a four-year-old and a one-year-old,  headed into cold and flu season, I was looking for a great deal on some children’s Tylenol. And that night, I found that deal, and so much more. I found ExtraCare, ExtraCare Bucks, great customer service, and a place to get what my family needed at a price that I could afford and that actually put money back into my shopping budget. To say that first experience was life-changing for me may seem dramatic, but it is absolutely, 100% accurate. That night CVS became a part of my life, and soon it became more than just a shopping destination: it became my happy place.

Let me tell you about my favorite day of the week: it’s Sunday. We often go to church Saturday night, so Sunday morning I spend some good time with my coffee, my newspaper ads, and my coupons. I see what’s on sale, consider what we need, and I make a plan for my weekly shopping. It is a very zen time for me. I’m not an expert at a lot of things, but I am good at coupons, and so I get geeked out excited about my weekly Sunday shopping trip. And the first stop on my Sunday Funday? Is always CVS.

On Sunday afternoons, my husband keeps the kids at home while I head out on my own, free as a bird, for an hour or so of “me time” – at the store. I know, I really know how to party right? But it IS a fun time for me. Right before I leave home, I check the CVS app on my phone to see if I have any ExtraCare Bucks that I can send to my ExtraCare card before I shop -it’s such a cool feature! And eco-friendly too – who needs paper?

I sent that baby to my card, yo.

I walk through the doors of my local CVS and it’s like the “Cheers” theme song starts playing – sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name – and they know mine. The manager always asks me if I need help finding anything and I always say “No thanks, I’m good.” and he always replies back, “I know you are, but I have to ask!” And he never fails. When I hit the door, my first stop is the wonderful Magic Coupon Machine (I believe the technical name is the “ExtraCare Coupon Center”).

I scan my ExtraCare card at this machine and cross my fingers that some fabulous coupons will pop out! These CVS coupons are awesome because you can combine them with manufacturer’s coupons to save on brand names, and there are often also coupons for CVS brand items, which I love.

(I totally scored Sunday!)

You know I am using this one!!!!
You know I am using this one!!!!

After I get my coupons, I stroll around the store and check the items off my list, pausing to look at what else is on sale, crunching numbers on the calculator on my phone, and of course checking for any sweet clearance deals. Just to make sure I don’t miss anything, I often quickly pull up my CVS app on my phone and check out the myWeeklyAd feature (which you can also get online). It shows me sales on the items I buy the most, which is so helpful! Here’s a screen shot of my personalized myWeeklyAd this week…Mountain Dew and makeup. Could CVS possibly know me any better???? I think not!!

 After I’m su-uu-re I’ve got everything I came for,  it’s time for me to check out, and I grab all my carefully-organized coupons from my purse along with any ExtraCare Bucks I have to spend – you get these for buying certain items and then you can spend them like cash on your next purchase.

These babies are basicall cash. Treat them well!

What I LOVE about ExtraCare Bucks is that you can spend them right away, while you’re right there in the store if you want to. Using your ExtraCare bucks with coupons can REALLY add up to big savings! I always enjoy looking at the bottom of my receipt to see how much I’ve saved.  It makes me a wee bit giddy sometimes!

CVS savings 2
This was a particularly good trip!

And you know what else is great about saving money and getting things we need and want (yes, I DID need those three new mascaras I got last week…right?)? It’s that when I leave that store with that giddy, happy, “I got a good deal” feeling – I take that feeling right back into my home with me. When I get home from a CVS run, I’m a happy girl. A happy wife, a happy mama, headed back home refreshed and cheerful to her family – and with a bag or two full of items that meet our household needs.

That feeling? Is why I’ve been shoppin’ it up at CVS for over six years, and while I will be for years to come.

What’s your favorite thing about CVS shopping?

My CVS deals and #doyourmakeup scores this week

It’s a great week at CVS this week! There are lots of great deals to be had and some of them are on beauty which makes this makeup junkie happy. Plus, cheap Huggies! Whee! I’ve been twice this week, and now CVS Beauty Club emailed me a $6/$30 beauty purchase coupon, so you know I’m going back. Here’s what I’ve gotten so far. I started out the week with a measly 4 extra care bucks.

Transaction #1:

CVS9813b

2 Colgate Total $2.99 each = $5.98

1 CVS Probiotic $9.99

2 Almay liquid lip balm $5.99 each = $11.98

total = $27.95

coupons I used:

-$5/$25 email coupon

-$2 two printable Almay liquid lip balm coupons from coupons.com

-$4/$12 cosmetics coupon from CVS magic coupon machine

-$1 Colgate coupon from SmartSource insert

-$4 ECB from last week

= $11.9 + tax = $13.62 and I got back $17.99 ECB – $9.99 for the probiotic, $4 for the Almay, and $4 for the toothpaste!

Now, CVS prints me off a $10/$50 EVERY time I buy something, so since I had so many ECB after that first transaction, I decided to put together another scenario using a $10/$50. Here’s how I did it!

Transaction #2:

CVS9913b

2 Huggies Slip-on diapers $9.49 each = $18.98

Softsoap $2.99

2 Ben Gay cream $4.49 each = $9.98

2 Desitin $3 each = $6

Johnson’s baby wash $3

Almay wake up eyeliner + highlighter (love!) $8.79

Wet ‘n Wild eyeshadow $2.99

Wet ‘n Wild megashield lipstick (BOGO 50% off) $1.49 (love also!!)

total = $54.22

coupons I used:

-$10/$50 CVS coupon on my earlier receipt

-$4 two $2 off Ben Gay coupons from SmartSource

-$1.75 $1 and 75 cents off Desitin printable coupon

-$1 Johnson’s printable coupon

-$5 two $2.50 off Huggies Slip-on diapers printable coupons

-$6 two $3 off Huggies Slip-on diapers CVS printable coupons

– $4/$12 Cosmetics purchase from CVS magic coupon machine

-$17.99 ECB from previous purchase

Total: $3.48 + tax = $6.62 and I got back $12 ECB. 4 for the Almay (buy $10, get 4- I had $2 credit left from previous purchase), 4 for the 2 Ben Gay, 2 for the baby wash & Desitin, and 2 for the Softsoap.

I’m pretty pleased with my deals!! With my beauty coupon and ECB, I am going to go back to CVS and get some Maybelline and Garnier products which are on ECB deals this week. Stay tuned!

And as a quick review, I absolutely LOVE the Almay eyeliner and the Wet ‘n Wild lipstick I purchased. The liquid lip balms make a nice gloss, too, but I wouldn’t use them as lipstick only. Here’s my #doyourmakeup pic in the Almay liner & Wet’n Wild “Make Me Blush” lipstick.

What are YOU buying this week??

See Jenny Shop: Major CVS Sunday haul!!

You guys, I had SO MUCH FUN CVSing yesterday! It was pretty much just like OLD times! Wheeee! To start out with,  I had 6 ECBs left over from last week’s deals. THEN when I scanned my Extra Care card at the Magic Coupon Machine, out popped my $5 ECB for spending $50 with the CVS Beauty Club! That’s my 2nd reward since I started shopping drugstore makeup about 2 weeks ago. And of course I haven’t actually SPENT very much to get up to that $50 total, since the total is BEFORE coupons and ECBs. WHEEE!! Here’s what I got yesterday. I was SO excited!

cvs623a

First I went for some great freebies to build up some more Extra Care Bucks!
Transaction #1:

Two Colgate toothpaste $2.99 each = $5.98

Two Coppertone Sport suncscreen, 2/$19.98

One Crest mouthwash $4.99

Total = $30.95

Coupons I used:

-$5/$30 purchase CVS email coupon (woot!!)

-$2/2 Colgate printable from coupons.com

-$1.10 off Crest mouthwash from coupons.com

-$5/2 Coppertone from today’s Smart Source insert

– 11 Extra Care bucks I had from previous purchase + Beauty Club Rewards

Total  = $6.85 + tax = 8.32

Got back 4 ECB for the Colgate, 8 ECB for the Coppertone, and 4 for the Crest = 16 ECB!

With which I did this next transaction. I cannot pass up a chance to stock up on diapers for cheap!

cvs623b

3 Huggies jumbo packs $9.49 each = $28.47

Desitin $3

Wet ‘n Wild blush $2.99

Wet ‘n Wild Megalast lip color (which I hated by the way – DO NOT BUY!) $2.99

total = $37.45

Coupons I used:

-$9 – three $3 off Huggies printable coupons

-$1 Desitin printable coupon

-$16 ECB from previous transaction

= $11.45 + tax = $14.08 and I got back 14 ECB – 12 for the Huggies/Desitin (baby care deal) and 2 for the Wet ‘n Wild. It was a cheap makeup deal that I couldn’t resist but like I said, I hate the lip color. I have tried some lipsticks from Wet ‘n Wild that I like but that one I cannot recommend. It made my lips feel so dry I thought they would crack and break off my face. Blecch.

But anway!! I got 14 ECB! And this time the Magic Coupon machine spit me out a coupon for $1 off any $1.99 Wet ‘n Wild purchase – even though I had just made one, I decided to spend that real quick, and get another Crest mouthwash because the limit was 2 on that deal and I had another coupon. So I got:

cvs623c

Crest mouthwash $4.99

Wet ‘n Wild lip gloss $1.99 (haven’t tried it yet but I am sure it will be fine as it’s not the same kind as the other.)

total = $6.98

coupons I used:

-$1 CVS coupon for Wet ‘n Wild

-$1.10 Crest mouthwash coupon from coupons.com

-$2 ECB

total = $2.88 tax = $3.37 and I got back 4 ECB for the Crest. And of course, all that Wet ‘n Wild racked me up some more earnings towards my next CVS Beauty Club reward!

So, I started the day with 11 ECB, spent a total of $25.77 for all that stuff, and ended the day with 16 ECB left to spend! I think that’s pretty darn good…especially when I would have paid more than that for just the three packs of diapers alone without coupons and Extra Care Bucks!

WEEE HOO, that’s what I got this week! What are you getting at the drugstores??
