Why I’m Not a Mini-Van Mom

I’m not a mini-van mom. I would love to be – really, I would. I think mini-vans are sweet, and I pretty much lust after the Toyota Sienna.

However, there are two reasons I’m not – and am highly unlikely to become – a mini-van mom.

Reason #1:

Our Toyota Camry

and… Reason #2:

Our Toyota Corolla

We bought the Camry in 2002 – just barely used, with 18,000 miles. Now, eight years later, it’s going on 158,000 miles… and still going strong.

We bought the Corolla in 2004 – brand new and fully loaded (and by fully loaded, I mean with windows that you roll up. Like, physically roll up. Remember those?) Anywho, it’s only got 138,000 miles on it.

As you can see, we drive the crap out of our cars. We rack up the miles, let the gas light come on (and then stay on for 30 miles or so) before we bother to fill up, and we have the oil changed sporadically at best (Bobby Rapson, I can see you cringing!).

These cars? Can take it.

We’ve never had the first problem with either one of them, and haven’t had to do anything other than replace the brakes and tires every once in a while (btw, don’t buy tires from WalMart. Don’t say I didn’t warn you). They both get good gas mileage (particularly the Corolla, which is why I drive it 65 miles to and from work every day, even though I prefer the more lush Camry!) and they have plenty of room for our kids and all their stuff.

Also – they’ve been paid off for years.

You know what that means? I am never getting my mini-van.

Looking on the Bright Side: Things I’m Excited About Today

This week I’ve been sort of… um… pessimistic. Grumpy. Bitchy, even (I still feel bad about grumbling about potluck dinners and my husband thinks I’ve gotten us blackballed from all future social events… that remains to be seen. It’s gotta be a coincidence that we don’t have any weekend plans, right?). Really, there’s no reason for my bad attitude, so I am going to switch things up a little and look on the bright side (totally unlike me, I know.)

So in no particular order, here are the things I’m excited about today.

1) My new prized possession. Last night when I came home from work, this was waiting for me:

A combination birthday/anniversary/just because present from my wonderful husband. It. is. awesome. The first thing I did was download Facebook, Twitterific, and Skype but I’m guessing this thing has the capability to do things beyond feed my social networking addiction, so if you have any suggestion for awesome apps, let me know.

2) Our upcoming vacation. In just a few weeks, we’re going here:

The Tamarack Lodge in Traverse City Michigan. I can’t wait. It really warrants two pictures.

Ah, perfection.

3) This baby bump.

That’s my sister and my about-to-be-born niece. It’s 10 days until her due date, and while it seems to Anna that her pregnancy is never going to end, the baby will be here any day.

4) It’s Friday. Enough said.

So, friends, what are you excited about today?

Hot Dogs and Helping Hands

This past Saturday I had the privilege, thanks to the Motherhood.com. to be a co-host at the Hebrew National “Better-than-a-Picnic ” Picnic in the Cleveland area.  It was SUCH an amazing event, I wanted to share a bit with you.

Me likey coupon for free Hebrew National product!

Hebrew National offered free hot dogs, drinks, and fruit to all the picnic attendees.  And we asked attendees to bring donations of hygiene items to make care packages for the soldiers (thanks to the USO of Northern Ohio for packing and sending them for us!) and the women and children in recovery at the Hitchcock Center for Women in Cleveland.

We also had a station where kids (and grown-ups) could make crafts for the folks we were collecting donations for.  They could make thank-you cards to go with the USO packages for our soldiers:

And decorate mini-canvases with inspirational sayings for the women and children at the Hitchcock Center:

Of course there was also lots of other picnic fun to be had!  My favorite was the mechanical bull. Which I abstained from since I’m a prego, but I REALLY wish my friend Mommy Snacks had been there to ride! It’s her specialty!

And of course there were super-yummy Hebrew National kosher all-beef HOT DOGS!  These dogs are so good even the lady getting married across the street couldn’t resist coming over to the park to get one!

It was an amazing day full of fun and giving back.  Thanks so much to Hebrew National and the Motherhood.com for making me a part of it, and for my amazing co-hosts Tesa, Tricia, and Grace, and Emily from the Motherhood.com for making it such a great event!!
