In someone else’s shoes

“His life story would probably make you cry. His shoes and socks would too. Today he was cold and his feet were wet. There was NO BOTTOM on one of his shoes. Thrilled does not quite describe how he felt an hour ago to have this problem fixed for him. Wish you could have seen this 9 year old boy skipping and singing out of the clinic at his school. This is why we do this.”
– From the Shoes 4 the Shoeless Facebook page

Last year I wrote about my volunteer work with a local non-profit called Shoes 4 the Shoeless. I know it’s been awhile since I’ve written about “Shoes” as I like to call it, but I hope you haven’t forgotten about it. I certainly haven’t. Unfortunately, all the school shoe deliveries where we fit kiddos in need with new shoes and socks have been on Tuesday/Thursday this year, and those are the days that Jonah has speech. BUT!!! When Jonah goes to preschool in January, I’ll be back in action with Shoes, and I can’t wait!

In the meantime, I’ve been running my mouth (mostly on Facebook) to make sure people know about Shoes, their mission, and their volunteer opportunities. If you’re not familiar, I’ll break it down for ya REAL quick-like. The mission of Shoes 4 the Shoeless is to provide new, properly fitting gym shoes and socks to local children in need. In our city of Dayton, Ohio, the city where I live, 40.9% of children live in poverty. The need is great, and there are currently a couple of thousand kids on Shoes’ waiting list. These kids are poor through no fault of their own; when we are out volunteering we see kids whose parents struggle and strive and cannot provide for their kids basic needs, and we see kids whose parents or caregivers simply will not provide for their basic needs. Both situations are heartbreaking. These kiddos need to have their basic footwear needs met, they need love, and they need kindness – and that is something we can provide. But we need help! And that is where you come in!

If you are local, you have the opportunity to get involved in a small yet monumental way, and a FUN way to boot (see what I did there?) I am excited to invite you to the first ever Shoeless Walk for Kids to benefit Shoes 4 the Shoeless. It’s a walk for all ages and it’s indoors at the Dayton Mall on Saturday, November 23rd. Registration at 8, and Santa will lead the walk starting at 9. Registration is FREE if you bring a new pair of gym shoes and socks, or you can pay $15 if you don’t want to bring shoes. (I myself am bringing shoes and a goal of 65 pairs of socks to celebrate my friend Jill’s mom’s 65th birthday!) I will be there with my family, and Emily will be there with her family, and we want to see YOU there with yours! It’s a SHOELESS walk – because we’re going to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. (Ok, not literally, but you guys? The shoes we take off these kids – they might as well not be wearing any.)

This walk is going to be a GREAT event, and a FUN time for your family. There will be all sorts of activities and entertainment, but most importantly – there will be all kind of opportunities for you to talk to your kids about giving back to their community – and to show them that you mean what you’re saying!

Friends, I’ve been there. I’ve taken off messed-up, ripped-up, too-small, too-big, barely-held-together shoes off of these kids’ feet. Their need is real, their need is great, their relief when those needs are met is palpable. I’ve seen their caring teachers and principals shed tears of joy over seeing their kids taken care of.  This mission changes lives! Please, please, please, join us to walk on the 23rd to put new, properly-fitting shoes and socks on the feet of kids in our community. It’s going to be a great time, and it’s going to make a HUGE difference.

Kindness matters, and this mission matters. Please join us November 23rd for the Shoeless Walk 4 Kids. Register online here and just show up with your new shoes & socks to donate on walk day! I can’t wait to see you there! If you register, let me know so we can plan a Mommin’ It Up meet-up!!!!!

Got questions? Leave them in the comments or email me!

See you on the 23rd!

Can’t make it but want to get involved? Sign up to volunteer to deliver shoes or donate so Shoes 4 the Shoeless can purchase shoes and socks!

SuperCousins Trick-or-Treat, Take 2!

After a rain-out of Beggar’s Night on October 31st, we were finally able to continue our Halloween cousins trick-or-treat tradition on Saturday night. As usual, it was a great time, and although a bit chilly, the weather was much improved! And of course, the kids were adoooorable!

Halloween take 2: Wolverine and Spider-Man @momminitup
Sam as Wolverine and Joshua as Spider-Man – pretty tough!

We weren’t sure how Jonah would do, but he ROCKED trick-or-treat in his Thomas costume!
Trick-or-treat take 2: Snow(phie) White
Sophie’s Snow White costume was made by the $3 wig I found on clearance at Target yesterday. Trick-or-treat postponement FOR THE WIN!

Kate was a very adorable Panda bear. Face painting courtesy of Aunt Anna! Photo-bombing courtesy of cousin Joshua.

It was really a wonderful night. Emily’s niece and nephew were equally adorable in their handmade costumes. But they aren’t pictured because we’re pissed at Anna for being so crafty and showing us up! Just kidding. I mean, we are pissed, but they are not pictured for privacy reasons. (Privacy? What’s that?)

I’m so thankful we got to continue our trick-or-treat tradition, and I’m even happier that Jonah did so well on his first time walking the block with the big kids. He didn’t even want to put on his costume at first, but he ended up really having a blast! And his “Trick or treat please” was the cutest thing you’ve ever heard!

It was also much more relaxing not having Beggar’s Night be on a SCHOOL night – we didn’t have to rush to get to Emily’s house or rush home to get the kids in bed. It was an all-around success, and I can’t wait until next year!

What did your little goblins get dressed up as for Halloween this year?

Rainy Halloween: Trick-or-Treat Scavenger Hunt

Last night, our Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating with Emily’s and her sister’s kids got RAINED OUT! But never fear, it is re-scheduled for Saturday! So, while you’ll have to wait an extra couple of days for copious photos of costumed cousin cuteness – they WILL be posted! In the meantime, I have another “treat” for you.

When I heard that Beggar’s Night was going to be postponed, I was like, OH NO THE KIDS ARE GOING TO CRY AND I CAN’T TAKE IT! Immediately my mind-brain sprang into action. I only had about an hour before they got home so I had to act fast. And really quickly, an idea formed: I’d make the kids a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt – complete with actual tricks. I had a few items I’d bought on clearance recently for stocking stuffers and I decided those and a few pieces of candy would be their treats. I grabbed 10 paper bags from the pantry and numbered them with a Sharpie. Then I filled them with various tricks and treats and set about writing clues to tell the kids where to look. Then I had to hide them all really quickly; I finished the set up with about 10 minutes to spare.

Halloween Trick or Treat Scavenger Hunt

When the kids got home, I gave them the bad news but then told them to grab their trick-or-treat buckets anyway because I had a scavenger hunt for them. They were SO excited! So I got my silly clues ready and read them aloud one by one.

The first bag had treats: two pieces of candy for each. The second bag was my favorite. It was a trick – a bag full of pine cones from the trees in our front yard. The clue for it was: “Here’s a clue that’s kind of naughty! Search in the place where you go potty!” I placed the bag full of pine cones on the toilet seat and with “#2” written on the bag, I thought it was a pretty hilarious potty joke! The kids didn’t get that part of it but I had a good laugh and they thought the trick in general was hi-larious. They loved all my tricks: a bag full of socks, a can of three-bean salad, and some of Jonah’s old shoes. Their treats were things like LEGO Friends pencils for Sophie and an Ironman notebook for Joshua. They cracked up at all my silly, rhyming clues and we had an awesome time.

This was right before they opened bag #2 – the first trick!

At the end of the scavenger hunt, they had a small bounty of treats, (only 4 pieces of candy because they are still going to get plenty on Saturday) and we all had very happy hearts. I am glad my spontaneous idea worked out and that I went for it. For once, being a “fun mom” worked out for me.
