Just beautiful.

Last week, we had two great adventures with our friends the Minors and their kids Jay and Joy. The first adventure, on Labor Day, was the Rapson family’s first-ever trip to our county fair. Even though it is close to our house, I’ve never been in all my 36 years! The second adventure was the Buddy Walk for our local Down syndrome association, where we walk with the Minors in honor of Joy and to raise funds for all the wonderful people in our area with Down syndrome and their families.

Both adventures were fabulous! First, the fair! I really can’t believe I’ve never been before. We had a great time!

Sophie and Jay are the same age and both pretty fearless, so they were inseparable the whole time. Jessica and I *may* have already started planning their wedding.

Joshua was typically less adventurous (shocker!) He liked exactly two rides, both of which stayed on the ground but spun so fast they made me ill! He rode this one, with Jonah, but Jonah bailed before it even started. 🙂

Jonah did however, LOVE the big slide. And by big I mean HUMONGOUS!

I loved it too! It was SO fun! But it killed my tailbone. Stinks getting old! Anyway, we had a great day. Here are some more fun pics from our day at the fair.

It really was a fabulous day. At the end we all went home happy and tired. Success! We had a great time with our pals, and it was nice to spend some time together just chillin’ before the big event we had all been waiting for…the Buddy Walk!! Saturday morning we got up early to join a couple thousand other people at our Dayton Dragons baseball stadium, 5/3 Field.

Team Peace, Love, & Joy was pretty BIG this year! And we raised almost $3,000 together! My family alone raised over $600. THANK YOU to everyone who supported us! This was the first year we had Joshua and Sophie raise funds, and they raised $40 and $45 respectively. I was very proud! Thanks to their big supporters! 🙂 I think they are starting to “get” why it’s important to raise funds for our friends with Down syndrome.

Can you see my halo?

As we set off on our walk, Joy got very protective of her special wheels!

The walk was awesome – it was so great to see ALL those people coming out in support of their friends and family members with Down syndrome.  My favorite part was at the start when a few dozen college baseball and basketball players from the University of Dayton formed a tunnel for kids to run through and get high-fives. The joy those special kids were feeling as they were cheered on – wow! To watch it was priceless! I am very thankful to those college kids for coming out and helping some people with Down syndrome feel really COOL.

(My big fail of the walk was forgetting to bring my good camera to get pics. Grr.)

All in all, it was a beautiful event. And I was reminded again that people with Down syndrome are just like us. They have an extra chromosome but they’ve got two arms, two legs, and a want to live happy, full lives chock with good relationships, fun experiences, hard work, achievement, disappointments, ups, downs, good, bad, adventures and everyday normal.

After the fair Monday and again on Saturday, my husband, who has a soft spot for little girls as many daddies do, said, “Man, Joy is just so beautiful. She is just such a pretty little girl.”

He didn’t say, “She’s so beautiful for a child with Down syndrome.” Because she’s just beautiful.  Beautiful, period. Just like any child (except for you know, she’s exceptionally beautiful. Not that I’m biased) you might see who takes your breath away.

I think her life is going to be filled with a lot of “She’s so ________!” Period. Exclamation point! I’m very happy to be one of the friends and family who will support her on her way.

Thanks again everyone who supported our efforts in raising funds for our friends in the Dayton area with Down syndrome. It matters!

My CVS deals and #doyourmakeup scores this week

It’s a great week at CVS this week! There are lots of great deals to be had and some of them are on beauty which makes this makeup junkie happy. Plus, cheap Huggies! Whee! I’ve been twice this week, and now CVS Beauty Club emailed me a $6/$30 beauty purchase coupon, so you know I’m going back. Here’s what I’ve gotten so far. I started out the week with a measly 4 extra care bucks.

Transaction #1:

CVS9813b

2 Colgate Total $2.99 each = $5.98

1 CVS Probiotic $9.99

2 Almay liquid lip balm $5.99 each = $11.98

total = $27.95

coupons I used:

-$5/$25 email coupon

-$2 two printable Almay liquid lip balm coupons from coupons.com

-$4/$12 cosmetics coupon from CVS magic coupon machine

-$1 Colgate coupon from SmartSource insert

-$4 ECB from last week

= $11.9 + tax = $13.62 and I got back $17.99 ECB – $9.99 for the probiotic, $4 for the Almay, and $4 for the toothpaste!

Now, CVS prints me off a $10/$50 EVERY time I buy something, so since I had so many ECB after that first transaction, I decided to put together another scenario using a $10/$50. Here’s how I did it!

Transaction #2:

CVS9913b

2 Huggies Slip-on diapers $9.49 each = $18.98

Softsoap $2.99

2 Ben Gay cream $4.49 each = $9.98

2 Desitin $3 each = $6

Johnson’s baby wash $3

Almay wake up eyeliner + highlighter (love!) $8.79

Wet ‘n Wild eyeshadow $2.99

Wet ‘n Wild megashield lipstick (BOGO 50% off) $1.49 (love also!!)

total = $54.22

coupons I used:

-$10/$50 CVS coupon on my earlier receipt

-$4 two $2 off Ben Gay coupons from SmartSource

-$1.75 $1 and 75 cents off Desitin printable coupon

-$1 Johnson’s printable coupon

-$5 two $2.50 off Huggies Slip-on diapers printable coupons

-$6 two $3 off Huggies Slip-on diapers CVS printable coupons

– $4/$12 Cosmetics purchase from CVS magic coupon machine

-$17.99 ECB from previous purchase

Total: $3.48 + tax = $6.62 and I got back $12 ECB. 4 for the Almay (buy $10, get 4- I had $2 credit left from previous purchase), 4 for the 2 Ben Gay, 2 for the baby wash & Desitin, and 2 for the Softsoap.

I’m pretty pleased with my deals!! With my beauty coupon and ECB, I am going to go back to CVS and get some Maybelline and Garnier products which are on ECB deals this week. Stay tuned!

And as a quick review, I absolutely LOVE the Almay eyeliner and the Wet ‘n Wild lipstick I purchased. The liquid lip balms make a nice gloss, too, but I wouldn’t use them as lipstick only. Here’s my #doyourmakeup pic in the Almay liner & Wet’n Wild “Make Me Blush” lipstick.

My Toddler Talks: Review & Giveaway

This is a book review, y’all. The book was provided to me by the author but all opinions are my own!

As toddlers will do, Jonah has recently switched things up on me when it comes to speech. Remember that post I wrote a few weeks ago about us getting into our therapy groove? Yeah, 2.2 seconds after I hit publish, he decided to stop cooperating with me at home! I’m not. even. kidding. Not even a little. He is still doing great at his therapy sessions, but as soon as I strap him in his booster seat at home he kicks up a fuss. So, I got him a (free, thanks Sarah!!) little table to sit at like he does at speech – that worked for a day or two. But he still wasn’t having it once he realized what I was up to.

jonah at table
No,YOUR house is a giant mess in the background of this photo! Mine is always perfect.

He still loves to sit at to do his OWN thing, however, and I’m glad we have it! I also casually leave things on it that I want him to play with and that usually works {insert diabolical laugh}.

So, frustrated with this situation, I did what most moms do – turned to the internet (specifically Pinterest, DUH) for a solution. I follow the boards of an awesome organization called PediaStaff (you should too) and through their boards I found a great website that caused me to breathe a sigh of relief – Scanlon Speech Therapy. As I was devouring the contents of this site, I found that it is written by a Speech-Language Pathologist named Kim Scanlon who is herself the mother of a toddler – jackpot! I subscribed to her newsletter and printed out some of her free resources. Then, I checked out her book:

MyToddlerTalksHeader

My Toddler Talks: Strategies and Activities to Promote Your Child’s Language Development.

And of course I knew I had to have it!! So naturally, I emailed Kim and asked if I could review a copy. Cause THAT is how I roll. You see, part of the problem we moms face when we work with our kids at home on delays is: WHAT TO DO!! It’s hard to constantly come up with new activities. And since Jonah is a whole year younger than Sophie was when we started working together, it’s totally different, and I need some help coming up with things.

My Toddler Talks has a TON of play ideas for working with your toddler. Like, about 50 pages worth. And the best part is, they are all using toys you probably already have! Like? A BALL. A Mr. Potato Head. Toy trains. A toy farm. Bubbles!!! Yes! I have all those things! And Kim’s book told me just what to do with them to encourage speech in my kiddo. All the activities are simple, step-by-step, and easy for parents to facilitate. She also has a website JUST for toddler & baby speech in addition to her Scanlon Speech site. Check it out here!

Jonah meets one Mr. P. Head.

Of course, the book isn’t all about play – it also goes over the basics of how to talk to your toddler to encourage speech, and what activities and language are appropriate for their ages/stages of development. Very useful stuff for any parent. In fact, the book is really written for parents who want to encourage even very young toddlers on the path to speech development – not necessarily toddlers who are already behind (though of course that is the case with mine). So, I would really recommend it for any parent of an infant to three-year-old, delayed or not.

This is a great book and you should totally go buy it. And subscribe to Kim’s newsletter while you’re at it.

Because Kim is so aweeeeesome, she also offered a copy of My Toddler Talks to give away! Woop woop! Here’s how to enter:

1) Leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to win the book.

2) Optional: extra entry available for those who “like” Scanlon Speech on Facebook. Leave a separate comment to let me know that you do.

3) Optional: extra entry for subscribing to Kim’s newsletter. (Click here, enter your name and email address on the right.) It’s SO HELPFUL! You won’t regret it. Leave a separate comment here if you subscribed.

Remember to leave a separate comment for each entry!

Giveaway ends Monday September 16th at 6 pm EST and a winner will be chosen at random.

Good luck! Thanks Kim, for letting me review your book and give one away!
