The Horrors of the Warm-Weather Cold

Today, it FINALLY stopped raining.  Hall-LE-lu-JAH!  It has been raining cats and dogs for over a week and for a few days there I was pretty gloomy about this wet, wet, wet spring. The kids and I have hardly gotten to be outside at all so far this season!

So, today, when the sun shone, my mood REALLY brightened.  A literal light at the end of the tunnel.

And then I got a runny nose.

NOOOO!!!

You see, there is NOTHING that will spoil spring and summer more than a warm-weather cold. They are the WORST.  I would rather be sick during actual “cold and flu season” when it’s miserable outside anyways than be totally laid up with a bad cold while it’s absolutely gorgeous outside!   I even wrote a post about this a couple of years ago when both Joshua and Sophie were sick with colds the better part of July and it nearly killed ME.

So needless to say, as soon as I started feeling a little cold-ish, I ran for my medicine cabinet to see what immune system-boosting product I might have available to start chugging immediately!

But if that doesn’t work, at least I know I can get relief – even in the spring and summer – from my old pal Vicks VapoRub.  I always have it around and since it has menthol and eucalyptus in it, it’s always has that nice cooling sensation!  Nothing’s more comforting to me when I have a cold than Vicks VapoRub – no matter the season.  It really does help relieve my cough, and I always use it on my kids, too – because I have found in my experience that there is pretty much no other safe and effective cough remedy for kiddos.

And if you’re lucky enough to be spared the dreaded warm-weather cold, you can take advantage of Vicks VapoRub for it’s other intended use – if you’re out there being active and you’ve overdone it, you can rub Vicks on your sore muscles for temporary relief from aches and pains.  It’s true!

So tell me – which one do you think is worse – a cold-weather cold or a warm-weather cold?

Today

Sammy had his 3 year old check up yesterday. I’d always thought people who said their kids got sick after well visits were full of it. That is, until Sam started throwing up at 5 a.m. And then again at 6. And then again a few minutes ago.

So he and I are hanging out at home all day and I’ve been trying to think of all the things I should get done with this unexpected day off. So far, I’ve eaten a bowl of cheerios and checked Facebook. I can check those things off the list! I should probably move his sheets and pajamas from the washer to the dryer… after I drink my coffee.

I also have another situation to deal with that completely perplexes me and I’m not entirely sure what to do about it. For the moment, I’m not doing anything about it, which I’m sure doesn’t sound like a big deal until I tell you that it involves my living room, a trash can, and vomit. Yeah, I should probably get to work on that. But like I said, I haven’t figured out how to deal with it, and I’m not sure google is going to be able to help me out with this one. I think calling my grandma would be more effective; she can clean anything.

Wow, I sound like Jenny with all this talk of body fluids. My apologies.

So anyway, we’ll see how this day shapes up, but right now my to-do list looks something like this.
1) Transfer laundry to dryer.
2) Toss trashcan out the back door.
3) Snuggle up with my boy.

That should about do it.

Breakfast: It’s What’s For Dinner

Have I mentioned that I looooove being a part of the ReadySetEat Shared Tastes Panel?

Well, one of the reasons I love it is because it is forcing me to try new recipes that I probably never would have attempted previously.  And they are turning out awesome.  Like for instance, this little meal right here:

Actual picture of the actual meal I made!

The Ham and Cheese Potato Tart (of DREAMS!!).  This is not only the best “Breakfast-for-Dinner” meal I’ve ever cooked but it’s one of the tastiest meals I’ve made ever.  And it was SOSOSOSO easy!  Bobby and I both l-o-v-e-d it and I now know what I’m taking to every Christmas brunch at my mother’s for the rest of all time.   I urge, nay, EXHORT you to go out and get what you need to make this baby ASAP!  Don’t delay!  You can find the recipe on ReadySetEat.com and save it to your recipe box, print it, and find out where the ingredients for it are on sale!  Woot!

The magnificent tart in slice form

Another recipe I made this month that was SO yummy and easy was the Black Bean Pasta Bowl.  I loves me anything that has pasta, cheese, and a southwest flair.  Plus, I’m a sucker for Cumin, I love the flavor!  The sweetness of the corn with the mild spice of Ro-Tel plus Cumin and black beans and the aforementioned cheese = paradise in my mouth.  This is the kind of meal I make mass quantities of so I can eat the leftovers for lunch the next day! SO. YUMMY.

If you haven’t checked out ReadySeatEat.com yet, you MUST!  I am loving the ease of finding new recipes, and how simple and fast they all are to make.  Not to mention TASTY!  And with the recipe box, I always know where to find my favorite recipes.  As a matter of fact, I’ve recently scandalized UP by giving away all my cookbooks – I’m a digital recipe girl now!

What recipes have you tried from ReadySetEat? If the answer is “none” -head on over there and add some of these goodies to your recipe box!
