We’re (Finally) Heading Back to School with Lands’ End!

We’re a little late to the back to school game around here – my kids just started school today. They had a fantastic summer, but both of them were excited to start a new year. We’ve had a blast getting everything ready – Kate and I seriously love shopping for school supplies and clothes!

One of the most important things we were on the lookout for was the perfect outfit for the first day of school. I’m not sure why, or how the tradition got started, but the first-day outfit is a big deal. Lands’ End realizes that too, and they have an entire Back-to-School Collection filled with stylish, durable, comfortable clothes that kids can wear all year. We had the opportunity to check some of them out, and we all loved them!

Take a look…

Lands End BTS k1

Kate’s wearing the Girls’ Solid Curved Hem V-Neck T-Shirt in Tidewater. This is part of the Knit Kit collection – tops, bottoms, dresses, leggings, etc. that are made from comfortable fabrics, have a no-itch construction, and come in all sorts of colors. This shirt is perfect for my comfort-loving girl! She really liked the v-neck and curved hem. Over that is the Girls’ Color Border Heart V-neck Cardigan. It’s 100 percent cotton and has the cutest heart-shaped patch on the elbows, as you can see in the picture below. The Girls’ 5-pocket Bootcut Denim Jeans fit her really well, and I love how well made they are – I know they’ll be in great shape when we pass them down to Sophie in a couple of years!

This is Kate in the Girls’ Solid Curved Hem V-Neck T-Shirt once again – this time in Dried Papaya. She’s wearing black Girls’ Flare Yoga Pants, which are super soft and comfortable but have enough Lycra to make sure they maintain their shape. They also have a wider waistband that doesn’t pinch her around the middle!

Kate’s very favorite part of both these outfits? The boots! The Girls’ Lacey Bow Back Tall Boots, to be more specific. She absolutely loves them – they look adorable, and the sherpa lining inside makes the comfortable. I love that they’ve got a durable rubber outsole. Kate picked the Dark Fawn color, but they also come in Chocolate, Magenta, Bright Aubergine, and Soft Silver Metallic. At $59, I think they’re a heck of a deal, too.

Of course, school shopping isn’t complete without a backpack, and Lands’ End is the place to find the perfect one. Their 2013 backpack collection features:
— Four distinct lines including ClassMate®, FeatherLightâ„¢, Dash and My First.
— More solid colors that are easy to personalize with embroidery options.
— Innovative design and superior durability at an incredible value.
— Small, Medium and Large size options to ensure proper fit.
— Colors and prints designed with the tastes of boys and girls in mind.

Kate picked the FeatherLight Backpack in Cabbage Purple Scatter Print.

The first thing I noticed about this backpack (other than the fact that is it super cute) was the shoulder straps – they have foam padding that makes them extremely comfortable. That’s important, because we all know how heavy kids’ backpacks can get! The back panels are mesh and make it breathable. There are two inside pockets and one is even padded for a laptop! (No one tell Kate what that one’s for, k?) The bungee strap on the front and the clipping loop on the side gives space for extra things like a jacket or lunchbox.

There’s pretty much room for everything.

How cool is that?

And now for Sam.

My little baby is a kindergartner! I don’t know how that happened. He’s not so little anymore, but dang is he not cute in his new Lands’ End clothes??

I know everyone thinks buying girl clothes is a zillion times more fun than boy clothes, but not me – I love boys’ clothes! Seriously, could this outfit be any more adorable? He’s wearing the Boys’ Super Hoodie in Vibrant Cobalt. It’s made of soft, breathable cotton, and I want one for me. For real. He’s also wearing the Boys’ Classic Fit Iron Knee Jeans. Everyone knows the knees are the first place on a kids’ pants to go, so Lands’ End not only doubly reinforces the knees, but they do it in a way that’s invisible. You’d never know they were Iron Knee pants – except for, you know, the lack of holes in the knees! Good Housekeeping magazine even gave Lands’ End’s Iron Knee Pants with a 2013 VIP (Very Innovative Product) award. Brilliant! I became a big fan of the Iron Knee Pants about 20 seconds after we were done taking pictures, when Sam managed to fall and scuff up his knees. He must have wanted to really make sure they worked as promised! Sam’s also wearing the Boys’ Landon Low Sneakers, otherwise known as the cutest shoes I have ever seen in my life.

And then there’s this.

lands end bts s3

I die.

Lands’ End’s collection of boys Graphic Ts and Poplin shirts combine to make the most adorable layers, as you can see. The 5-Pocket Corduroy Pants complete the look.

Sam is in full-day kindergarten, so for the first time, we’ll be packing his lunch this year. We’ve had great luck with Kate’s Lands’ End lunchboxes in the past, and I’m glad to have one for Sam this year too. He picked the ClassMate EZ Wipe Lunch Box in Rich Red. It’s insulated and will keep food cold for up to 5 hours, and the interior wipes clean easily. It’s leak resistant and PVC free. I love the monogram – my Sammy!

It also makes a great shield, as you can see from the pictures!

So there you have it – my kids are all ready to head back to school thanks to Lands’ End.

What’s your back to school must-have?

And then a hippie changed my life.

Last week we packed up the family truckster and headed off on vacation.

Our first stop was Jenny’s parents’ house in Virginia.

After a slightly harrowing arrival (we got lost in their “neighborhood”, which is on top of a mountain with only very scary looking roads and very little cell service. Fortunately Aunt Diane got my SOS text and sent Uncle Charlie to find us!) we had a lovely visit.

Uncle Charlie took Andy and the kids on a hike, where they had the very educational experience of finding a rattle snake (!!). Later, Aunt Diane and I took the kids to a children’s museum while Andy and Uncle Charlie stayed back to play mountain men and drive around on the four wheeler. That evening, Andy and I left the kids on the mountain and went out to dinner in Lexington, VA. Nothing like a date on vacation!

From there to the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA. We went there because one day I randomly googled “best family vacations” or something, and this resort came up. It had great reviews and a lazy river – I was sold. And I was not disappointed – it was incredible. I wish I could go back right now.

We also took about a day and a half to do some of the historic sites – Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown Settlement. Andy, Kate and I enjoyed both – Sam was a bit young for the experience. He pretty much just wanted to get back to the resort and hit the water slide.

Who am I kidding, I couldn’t wait to get back to the pool either.

Before we knew it it was Thursday and it was time to pack up and head back to Ohio. We got home about 11:00 that night, but we weren’t home for long. The next day we headed to Friendship, Indiana for the Whispering Beard Folk Festival.

Let me say – I was skeptical about this adventure from the start, but Andy was super excited about it and – well – it seemed less painful than some of the other music-related “experiences” he’s suggested over the years.

A Friday afternoon to Sunday morning camping trip required WAY more crap than our previous Friday-Thursday trip did.

image (13)

That was the first sign things were going downhill.

Here was the second.

image (14)

And the third.

image (16)

This place was out in the middle of nowhere.

The day before, I had texted Jenny in a panic not knowing how I was going to charge my phone battery all weekend. As it turned out, it didn’t matter, because there was no cell service.

I felt like it was 2002 or something.

But, we pitched our tents, got everything set up, grilled hot dogs, and listened to some folk music. Everything was peachy until it was time for bed.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but Kate is very, very sensitive to sound when she sleeps. As in, she can’t stand the noise of bugs outside the house when we are inside the house with the windows closed. We’ve had problems with this for years – at home, at hotels, you name it.

Why we thought camping was a good idea is beyond me.

So, Friday night when she was hot and dirty and exhausted and just wanted to sleep, there was still a concert going on. After the music ended, there was the cacophony of 30 college kids in the campsite behind us. (Kate learned some new vocabulary words that night, yay!) Then, after those kids went to the after party at some barn, there was the sound of bugs and frogs.

Kate just about lost her damn mind. And so did I.

She was quite literally hysterical for probably a solid two hours.

Eventually, she went to sleep – only to be awakened by the joyous noise of her father snoring in the next tent.

This led to another, I don’t know, hour of hysterics. She was finally able to sleep after she crafted herself a sound barrier.

image (3)

It was an awesome night.

The next day was better, though. It was super hot, but we stayed in the shade and played cards, Blokus, and Fibber (omg a dumber game I have never played). We played washers and football and baseball, and we had a fun day as a family.

image (17)

image (2)

By late that afternoon, though, I was already dreading the coming night. Around 6pm, I looked at Andy and said “What’s more painful, spending another night here or driving home through the night?”

We both took one look at Sam…

image (18)

…and decided to get the hell out of dodge.

After we packed up all of our belongings, our neighbors (not the rowdy kids, a nice couple who had a brain left their son at home) came back to their tent and asked why we were leaving. I explained the situation with Kate and noise

And this is where a hippie changed my life.

(They probably weren’t hippies at all. He is probably an IT guy who threw an old t-shirt and an ironic trucker hat on for the weekend. And I heard her say she bought her hippie dress on “one of those flash sale sites.” I don’t think hippies shop on gilt.com. But I digress.)

He said, “That’s why I bring earplugs everywhere I go. We couldn’t even hear each other talking last night, and we didn’t wake up until 10 am!”

Earplugs. Are you fishing kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Do you know how many hours of my life could have been saved – or slept through – by having purchased some freaking 99 cent EARPLUGS???? It had never, ever occurred to us.

The rest of the night, Andy and I kept looking at each other saying “we are idiots.”

However, we were idiots who were not stupid enough to spend another night at a loud campground, so after the music ended for the night, we hit the road.

And as soon as we were back in the land of 3G wireless? I made an immediate purchase from amazon.

hearos

Thank you, psuedo-hippie guy. You will never know the impact our brief encounter had on my sanity.

Giveaway: Canon PIXMA MG6320 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer

canon pixma

Pencils – check. Paper – check. Notebooks – check.

New printer – ??

Don’t have one of those yet? Lucky for you, we’re giving one away!

It’s no secret that back-to-school must-haves have changed over the years, and kids – and parents – just need access to certain things to make life easier. A fantastic home printer is definitely one of them.

We have a lot of technological gadgets in our house, but until last week, we’d been functioning without a home printer for years. It’s been a giant pain. That’s why I jumped at the chance to review (and give away!) a Canon PIXMA MG6320 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer.

I got it up and running two days ago, and I can already tell how much simpler it’s going to make our lives – and school hasn’t even started yet. I can only imagine the workout the printer will get in the next couple of weeks as we print pictures, school forms, homework, and more.

The first thing I did was download the Canon iEPP mobile app. In about 30 seconds I had the app downloaded and sent a picture to print straight from my phone.

photo (39)

From the app, I can print directly from my camera’s photo roll, or I can use my phone as a scanner and then send the document I scan to print. From anywhere. Canon also has Google Cloud Print, which means you can print directly from Gmail, Google Docs, or Chrome – from your mobile device or browser.

This is game-changing, people.

In addition to its sheer convenience, Canon makes printing fun. They have a new Facebook app that allows you to turn photos and videos into comic strips that you can then download, print, or share on Facebook.

comicPage

By adding text and filters, you can get as creative as you want!

You can even make those Pinterest-y back-to-school photos that everyone’s posting. This one took me approximately 14 seconds to create and print. Finally – a project I actually have time for! (And seeing as how this was on the first day of school last year, it only took me a year to get around to doing it!)

I love this printer, and I think you will too!
