Book Worms

Tonight we went out to dinner. The entire time we were at the restaurant, Kate didn’t say two words to us. And it was perfectly ok with me.

She had her nose in a book.

On the way to the grocery store… not a peep. She had her nose in a book.

At the grocery store, she sat inside the cart instead of walking beside me. She had her nose in a book.

It was Junie B. Jones, not a literary masterpiece, and while Junie B.’s grammar drives me bananas, I can’t really describe how good it made me feel to see her unable to tear herself away from the story.

I love, love, love to read. Books have been such a companion for me throughout my life, and even though I hope Kate continues to be less backward and shy than I always was (her outgoing personality still catches me off guard at times), I hope she will develop a passion for reading the way I did.

Just this weekend, I remembered how much I enjoy a good book. I hadn’t read anything for a while… I had been plodding my way through a less-than-compelling book for a couple months, but I finally put it aside and grabbed some fun books as we headed out on our road trip.

While we were gone, I read these books:

They’re by two of my favorite authors, and I loved them both (as I have everything else those two have written).

Now, much like Kate, I have the bug. I am back on the reading wagon, and I’m looking for recommendations. We’ve got a week at the beach coming up and I need a stock pile!

So… whaddya got? What’s on your summer reading list this year? I can’t wait to find out!

  1. So happy about that little bookworm! I just read Heart of the Matter, too. I finally read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, about Lewis and Clark. It is not your typical beach book, but it was great, very well written and enjoyable.

  2. I can remember doing that as a kid, please let Kate be less shy than me though! Recently finished Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and currently slugging my way through Mitchner’s the Source, I may have to give it up soon. I loved Undaunted Courage Aunt Diane!

  3. Kate is NOT shy! Do not fret. All I have been reading this summer is WWII survival stories, mostly about Jews who lived in hiding. I would not suggest this for the beach however! I LOVE everything by Anita Shreve – Sea Glass and Fortune’s Rocks I highly recommend off the top of my head.

  4. Too funny, I have a book review scheduled for tomorrow on Redneck Latte Ravings! Well, unless Lindsay gets out on bail!

And I loved to watch my kids read too. It wasn’t just the quiet, it was just a good thing. One of the best discussions Donovan and I have ever had was when we read Alas Babylon – a must read – by Pat Frank (1959). Katrina had just hit and the similarities in behavior were astounding…I learned a great deal about my son that day.

@Jenny – Sea Glass is one of my all time faves! We’re practically twins!
Right now I’m reading The Women – a novel about Frank Lloyd Wright and “his women”…naughty boy, Frank, naughty!

  5. Have you read The other Boleyn Girl?
I also like Jennifer Weiner (did I spell her name right?), her books are always a fun beach read!

  6. ok, Ignore my Jennifer Weiner comment. I clearly have reading comprehension issues today. I actually own that book too. D’oh!

  7. Anita Shreve is a great author to read! I love her books. I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned reading books by Jodi Picoult, she’s one of my favorite authors.

For books on the lighter side, Fast Women, Bet Me are two by Jennifer Crusie that I love. Last weekend I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It’s a young adult book…but it’s fabulous! I highly recommend! If you plan on picking it up, don’t forget the second book in the trilogy, Fire Girl (I think. I’m still waiting on my copy) and the third book will be released this summer.

I love the books by Susan Mallery…I could keep going and going and going!

  8. Back to read the comments. My book review is now next week as tomorrow is Fashion Friday.

And Liz, dear, Philippa Gregory who wrote The Other Boleyn Girl needs to be flogged. Too much incorrect history in ALL her books. She has more inept fact checkers than does Sarah Palin!

And, why have you all not bounced over to Redneck Latte to see the picture of Levi from Playgirl? I’m stunned, really, seriously, I mean it. Stunned!!

  9. I’ve loved all the Emily Griffin books since you got me started on them! I’ve set aside Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson for my long long long plane ride and I just finished the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

  10. I have a bookworm too and I’m glad he likes to read so much! I am hoping to read the newest Karen Kingsbury book. Have you read any of her books? She’s one of my favorite authors.

  11. Oh how I love to read. It’s a part of me. I remember waiting until my parents went to bed to break out my flashlight and read into the wee hours on a school night just because I had to know how the story ended. My husband bought me a Nook for Mother’s Day, and I thought I’d never enjoy reading e-books, but it turns out it’s the same. Maybe better. I’ve currently reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Maybe a little too sexy, but the story line is fantastic. I’m starting the Sookie Stackhouse series next 🙂

  12. My kids are the same way!! Ellie is reading an average of 2 hours daily – and Alex gets in at least a half hour or more, it’s such an amazing joy to watch!!

I’m a James Patterson girl myself, I love mysteries, also Janet Evanovich is HILARIOUS!!! Very easy reads. And of course if you ever want, I have the Twilight series you can borrow….haha. I’m out of things myself and I have never read any of the authors above so I’m going to check them out!

  13. We have the same taste in books…LOVE both those books. Have you ever read anything by Kristin Hannah or Jodi Picoult….both are also great authors, with quick reads!

  14. I just started Eat, Pray, Love….the next book on my list is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I’ve already downloaded it to my Nook. I hear it’s an amazing book. I love Jodi Picoult and the new Emily Giffin book is on my to read list as well.

  15. I’m reading Anne of Green Gables again- a classic- and The Partner by John Grisham at the moment. BTW, its something like the 50th anniversary of To Kill A Mockingbird. Always worth rereading.

  16. I am a devour-er of books, too 🙂 I love all the Twilight books, have read all the Sookie Stackhouse books, Eat, Pray, Love is a favorite; and more recently Water for Elephants, The Help, The Lovely Bones, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and Shiver. Just started Band of Brothers & Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven today. This summer has been a catch up of reading since I have had a lot more time to read again, and I love it 🙂 Takin’ all I can get right now!

  17. UP – agree on the Phillipa Gregory, try a little Alison Weir if you want the real story, dense but beautiful

Also: whoever mentioned Black Dagger Brotherhood is my new best friend!

  18. I love Janet Evanovich. I’m getting ready to start Sizzlin’ Sixteen but wanted to wait until the weekend because I always stay up too late reading her books. Recently read The Help and loved it. Also Sarah’s Key and Once Upon A Day – really liked both of those as well.
