Just Do(ing) It

Last week I wrote about how Kate came into her own this year with her love of swimming and basketball. I am a firm believer in the importance of athletics for girls (ask me sometime, I’m sure you’d love to hear me get on my soapbox), and I love to watch her confidence grow with every game or meet in which she competes. And let’s face it – I like to pretend I am still an athlete too.

This week we both get to live out our dreams at the Nike Young Athletes Innovation Summit.

We’re traveling to Beaverton, Oregon to visit the Nike world headquarters and to learn about what Nike is doing to advance youth athletes. We are so, so excited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am thrilled to have three days of one-on-one time with my girl. I also can’t wait to tell you all about it, so I’ll be tweeting and facebooking throughout the weekend. I’ve been scouring the internet for pictures of Nike’s campus, and it looks like an absolutely amazing place. I cannot wait to go.

I promise not to steal any Michael Jordan paraphernalia. Maybe.

  1. I have a friend that asked her son what he REALLY loved. He was in boyscouts, 4-H, soccor and swimming. He’s answer was legos, so she said ok, let’s spend your time doing that. Did you know there are competetive lego teams? Anyway, to get on my soapbox, I think the most important thing is letting kids do the activities they want to.

    1. This is the exact reason I started a Lego Club in our town. My son is so good at constructing his own pieces, and so many other kids are, too. Lego is a crazy, elaborate, creative world…and my son just cannot get enough. I think it’s all about fostering their passions! He also just started karate, but we’ll see how long that sticks. I found an inexpensive dojo on the college campus near me…so this time maybe I won’t shell out hundreds of dollars on something he gets bored with (again!).

Emily, have fun!! Kate reminds me of my 8yo niece, who also excels in swimming and basketball. It’s a wonderful confidence booster, and she’s really as you said ‘come into her own’ with both activities. 🙂

  2. There is more to life than ball games!

I turned out ok-ish too, and I’m not athletic AT ALL!

Let them find what they love, and let them do it.

    1. for the record I was JUST KIDDING!!! Didn’t mean to start people down the wrong path…just making fun of my inability to do anything even slightly athletic. I was good at b-ball in the 6th grade. I peaked at 12.

  3. So excited for you guys! What a fun memory for Kate! And yes I AM ALL for athletics for girls (and my boys too since I don’t have any girls to live vicariously through ;-)). My boys think it’s pretty cool that their mama can keep up with their dad! Good for you for encouraging Kate to get active and find something she can be passionate about! Have fun on your trip!

    On another note, awesome!

And on a final note, I did a Nike 10K race here a couple of weekends ago, and got to try on some of the new Nike flex shoes. Fell in LOVE.
