Review: Philips AVENT Double Electric Breast Pump

Now that Jonah is eight weeks old, I figured I’d better see if he will take a bottle so I can leave the house without him once in awhile!  I had a double-electric breast pump with that I used with both of my other kids, but since you know, I thought I was DONE (how many times can I say that!? Whoops!), I gave it away.  So I was *thrilled* when Philips AVENT offered me one of theirs to review.  My old one was a different brand, but the manual single pump I also used with both kids was an AVENT and I loved it.

I was a little overwhelmed when I opened the pump, because it looked like there was a lot to it.  However, there was a quick set-up card in the package that showed me exactly what to put where, and it was as easy as pie.  Not to mention, it comes in a beautiful briefcase, and two very nice quality coolers with thinsulate to keep your pumped milk cool.

Once I got everything hooked up, it was time to pump!  After all, that’s what really matters, right?  Well, I was very happy with the way this pump allowed me to express my milk.  I don’t understand the technology, but the pump allowed me to choose the pace at which my milk was expressed – there was no dial, no levels to choose from – just the action of my hand on the pump and the touch of a button.  The pump then mimicked the rhythm I had chosen – it was amazing!

The pump did a great job, expressing my milk quickly (and much more comfortably than my old pump) so I could get on with my life.

I’ve gotta say, I think the pump did a great job and I’m thrilled to own it.  I know I’ll use it a lot over the next couple of years (?) while I nurse Jonah.

  1. I just purchased this pump yesterday. I did several reviews. I was looking for a pump that was better than the inexpensive pump I have.
I needed on that pumped that simulates a baby, with more suction combinations that my pump had.

I did reviews for about 2 months before making a decision. I decided on the Avent. I had a cheap $70 pump by first years and I was only pumping 3-4 oz per 20 minute session for my 3 month old. I needed something better since he was taking 6 oz.

I was super excited about my $235 purchase, As soon as I got home,I watched the dvd it came with and read some breast pumping tips on-line. I used it and was very impressed. The milk came out fast and it did not hurt. Also the pump is so quiet that I can pump while Joshua is sleep next to me. I only got about 3-4 oz, but I thought it was because I did not know what I was doing.

So now I’m on Day 2!I woke up early to pump and I was not getting a good let down. BUT I see the potential. It took me twice the time the second day I used it and I got less milk. I’m thinking that it is just because I’m not used to the technology yet. Although I do not like it so far, I really think with practice, i will get used to it and I will begin getting enough milk to feed my son.

Overall, I think I may grow to love the pump. I just have to get used to the fact that it comes with several pieces so It is hard to use and messy. The milk spills when pouring into storage bags because the container is too top heavy. Also milk gets stuck in the suction cups and makes a mess.

For anyone interested, I will post again once I get the hang of this~ Joshua’s mommy
