Things I Love Thursdays: Green Smoothies

Take a look at what I’ve been eating for breakfast:

I know, I know.

It looks delicious and you wish you had some.

That’s not what you were thinking?

Here’s what Jenny had to say about it:
“Cousin, I KNOW we’ve had the discussion before about how lunch should be CHEWED, not SLURPED. Don’t make me get out my “INTERVENTION” banner on you. YOU KNOW I WILL.”

Jenny loves green drinks but prefers them chock full of caffeine and high fructose corn syrup.

In any case, I’ve been drinking green smoothies every morning in 2012, and I love them. Seriously, I do. I put a pear, a banana, an apple, some celery, and either spinach or kale in the blender, hit the “smoothie” button, and one minute later I’ve got a delicious, nutritious concoction that I can sip/slurp/chew on the way to work.

All five servings of fruit and vegetables before I’ve even had my coffee.

I’ve found a zillion recipes – my favorite website so far is IncredibleSmoothies.com. You can look up recipes by ingredient, which I find helpful. I can’t wait to try a watermelon smoothie this summer.

Any other green smoothie drinkers out there?

  1. It is undeniably chock full of all things good but it looks so bad! I am glad, however, that you are health-conscious, unlike certain older couch potato types in your family.

  2. You SO get me. And seriously, I will tolerate you doing this for breakfast but NO other meal or the INTERVENTION banner WILL come out. And also? Blend those things GOOD. The sip/slurp thing is ok but smoothies are NOT meant to be CHEWED, cousin. *ick*

  3. That’s one of my go-to breakfasts during the work week, but in our house they are called Shrek or Ogre smoothies. Yogurt, milk, frozen fruit blend from Costco and a whole lot of spinach usually (although I recently tried kale too). I make up about 6 servings at once and keep them in the freezer for easy grabbing in the morning.

  4. Up until recently I would buy the Naked Green Machine juice at Starbucks and have them blend it with a venti scoop of ice. However, they stopped carrying Green Machine at our local stores 🙁

@Emily: Yes, they taste very fruity. The green Machine drink tastes very citrusy. When I brought them to church on Sundays everyone would look at it and make an awful face, but that’s because they didn’t try it.

  5. The color of your green smoothie is DIVINE compared to my mud green smoothie. I have started making one based around this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Grass-Powder-30-SuperFood-8-5-Ounce/dp/B002G7US5W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1327022310&sr=8-2

Like you, I am just a regular girl who is also motivated by the idea of getting all my fruit/veggie servings in one giant slurp, and when I read about this stuff, I thought it might be easier than continuing to buy a bunch of produce. I also add a banana, some milk, some cold coffee if I have it left over, a little bit of vanilla, and (the reason for the mud color)… a tbsp of plain cocoa powder. (oh wait, I also grind up some oats… can’t tell at all they’re in there). It was the best thing I could think of to cover up/complement the taste of this green powder (and not add a million calories). And, apparently, cocoa powder isn’t straight up bad for ya. This reminds me of the banana chocolate Vivanno from Starbucks… which I’m pretty sure I’m the only one in the world who has ever ordered that, bc people always give me the strangest looks like they’ve never heard of them (which they haven’t)!

  6. I got hooked on these last year. I love that you can add all the spinach and not even taste it. My issue with being able to drink it was that it was green. It was hard for me to get over the color but when I did I loved them.

What a great way to start out the morning! =)

  7. We have a friend who bought an industrial kitchen sized smoothie maker for these. He uses his for most of his meals though and it kind of grossed me out (they stayed with us for 3 weeks last summer). Anyway, he made me a couple of them, but made them purple-ish by adding in raspberries or blueberries because I could NOT get past the green color.

  8. I have been making green smoothies almost every morning so far this year! (which sounds REALLY great until you think “hey, it’s only January 24!)

    Seriously checking out that website!
