A Day at the Museum

Yesterday the kids and I ventured out to our local children’s museum, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, to check out their new Mindbender Mansion exhibit. We LOVE the Boonshoft and go several times a year, but it’s always more fun with friends! So I “twisted” Cortney’s arm and she and her boys joined us as well.  We had an awesome time!  First, we hit all our regular exhibits, like the zoo and the Cassano’s Pizza making-station and the pretend Animal Hospital, then we ventured to the main exhibit hall to see Mindbender Mansion.

Full-body spelling and trivia!

Mindbender Mansion is full of brain teasers and interactive challenges.  I gotta admit, some of  the brain teasers were even hard for myself and math teacher Cortney, so it is fun for the whole family!  There are also several group activities that are really fun, like this fast-paced shape sorting – putting food shapes on “cafeteria trays” on a conveyor belt!  The kids LOVED this one.

We spent almost an hour in just Mindbender Mansion itself.  Everything was SO hands-on and easy to manipulate, the little kids even had fun playing the activities that were age-appropriate as well as the ones that were over their heads, and all the kids had a lot of fun working on things together.

We easily could’ve spent at least another hour in just the Mindbender Mansion exhibit, if I hadn’t had the baby with me. We might have to go back and check it out again before it moves on. The four kids and two moms in our group had a blast using our bodies and brains and working together!

Mindbender Mansion will be at the Boonshoft through August 28th.  If you haven’t experienced it yet, go for it!  We had a blast and learned a few things too!

  1. I loved the Dayton Museum of Natural History when I was a kid!

I love museums in general, so it wasn’t a stretch.

  2. We were there a week ago Monday. We did the same thing…hit the “regulars” and wished we had started with the Mindbender Mansion. Jake has surgery on Friday, with a recovery of a couple weeks of limited physical activity, so we def. plan to go back! The food sorting station was a big hit for us, too! I want to go back and figure out some of the games that were driving me NUTS! =)

  3. Thanks! We went in the spring…but hoping to get there this summer! Sounds like a good time!

  4. I’m so glad you posted this! We love Boonshoft! In the winter we go about once a month. We haven’t been since summer started though. This exhibit looks like a lot of fun!!

  5. Our grand kids visit us every summer and they usually spend 2 1/2 months with us. So we have to keep them busy. So I searched on the internet and found this place. I had heard of it before but never did adventure down in Dayton that much. This Summer instead of spending all our vacation money on Zoo’s and Theme Parks like we did last year, we decided to get the Adventure Package from BoonShoft and added on a couple more for my son and daughter. Our grand kids have had a blast down there. We even went to COSI twice and I asked them out of all the ones they visited which ones they liked and they all said Boonshoft. They have really enjoyed going down there and it has saved me a lot of money. We definitely will be renewing our membership again.
