Two Pink Lines

I’ll never forget the first time I saw two pink lines on a pregnancy test. It was June 18, 2003. I was 25 years old and had been married a little over three years. Bobby and I had been trying to get pregnant for about three months, and I wasn’t too stressed out about it yet, but I was getting a little nervous. After all, you never know how that’s all going to go until you try.

My period was only one day late, but I was never late, so I went ahead and bought a test. I had read that you need to test with your first pee of the day, so I got up that morning and rushed into the bathroom. I had to hurry to get the thing unwrapped because I really had to go! I barely had time to read the instructions and hoped I was “doing it right”. After I’d done the deed, (mmm… double entendre anyone?) I laid the test flat on the top of the toilet and tried not to look at it. But, as I was brushing my teeth about 30 seconds later, I accidentally looked. Seriously, it was an accident. I swear! What I saw made me gasp and swallow a great deal more toothpaste than is appropriate. There on the pee-pee test were two pink lines, announcing with their rosy duplicity that I was somebody’s mother.

I picked up the test and stared at it to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating, finished brushing my teeth (little did I know how soon I wouldn’t be able to brush them without puking!), and jumped around the bathroom in excitement. My husband was already at work so I had to wait alllllllllll daaaaaaaaaaaay before I got to tell him (I had to do it in person of course!) He said those three little words that all men say upon hearing such an announcement – say it with me ladies – “Are you sure?” When I confirmed that yes I was sure, he broke out in the world’s biggest smile. The same smile he gives his son when he arrives home from work every day. That boy’s made us smile a million times since that moment, and I expect we’ll never stop smiling about him.

  1. I loved hearing that you were having a baby that week. Reading this I laughed and thought about my own pee-stick experiences.

I have peed on so many sticks that I became a professional POASer. I quickly determined that peeing in a cup and dipping the stick allowed for faster release of the desirable FMU (first morning urine) and also made it available for testing different brands against eachother – particularly with ovulation tests. After 10 months I saw a faint second line on an HPT and promptly dipped 4 other brands in the same pee to be sure. Then I took pictures for posterity.

Perhaps I should have been a research scientist.

  2. jenny not only was there when i took my test…she was intimately involved. dont get too excited. it wasnt like that.

rich and i had just started trying so i wasnt thinking much of anything. i mean…i figured a few months of trying is normal. i had already bought some tests and was waiting until i was officially late to take them. i had all the symptoms of starting my period, so once again…no big deal. jenny kept asking me if id taken the test yet…which of course i hadnt. i was putting it off because i didnt want to waste a test.

so anyway…i had just been at my BIL, camerons wedding rehearsal and was on my way to jennys for dinner when she called me AGAIN to ask if id taken a test yet. i was planning on it the next morning. at that point, she ORDERED me to the drug store to buy a test (even though i had some at home). she seriously wanted me to take it at her house with our husbands downstairs waiting! i was getting nervous. when i got to her house, i swear she opened the door jumping. so cute.

i ran upstairs while jenny opened the box like it was Christmas and read the instructions. (it was one of those digitals so we wanted to get it right.) she handed me the stick, i shut the door, and she stood in the hallway talking to me. i peed quickly and got dressed just as quickly because i really wanted to be back with jenny immediately. as i was opening the door, i was looking at the stick with confusion because it was flashing. i pointed it toward jenny (remember she has the instructions)and said, “why is it flAAAAAAAAAAOH MY GOD!!!!!!” jenny and i simultaneously saw ‘pregnant’. we screamed like idiots and jumped up and down like school girls.

by the time we got downstairs, i think the entire city of dayton knew. i opened the door and my husband said, “so i guess youre pregnant.” after i said yes i thought he was gonna pass out. hes pretty white but that was a new shade. we sat on bobby and jennys couch for a few minutes, staring at the hardwood floor, when bobby exclaimed, “lets go celebrate!” they were so excited and we were zombies. we went out anyway.

looking back makes me grin. even though we were trying, we were in total shock. were we ready to have a kid? could i really do this?

im so glad they were there. so jenny…what are you doing the week of the 19th? =)

  3. I loved reading your story… Thanks for sharing! It’s so much fun to share in that experience with others, even if it’s just hearing about it years later!
