Transform Us, Please!!

Ok, so, the title of this post may be a bit misleading.  Emily and I do not want to be turned into robots that can turn into semi-trucks nor do we want to go on Extreme Makeover and get new noses (among other things) –  but we are super-excited to say that our KITCHENS are going to be transformed!!! Can you say DREAM COME TRUE??  We are thrilled beyond belief to announce that we are Granite Transformations Trendsetter Bloggers (that’s what that button in our sidebar is all about!)  Granite Transformations is providing us with new kitchen countertops (which they make themselves!) for freezies, and they are re-facing our kitchen cabinets, which Emily and I are paying for but at a nice discount.

And we. ARE SO. EXCITED!!!

Perhaps you remember that I lovingly refer to my kitchen as “the eyesore of my house:”  well, now you know why:

And for another beautiful view:

Besides the new kitchen floor that my darling husband gave me for our 10th anniversary, I pretty much hate it.  The countertops are cheap and the cabinets are crap!

So when Jacob and Nick from the Dayton office of Granite Transformations came over last week and showed me how they can make my kitchen beautiful – without ripping it it out and making it non-functional – in just three or four DAYS I was so happy!! They were so nice and knowledgeable.  I had a lot of questions about HOW the heck they were gonna be able to work with my kitchen  (it has serious problems!!) and they answered them all and assured me they can make it happen!

Don’t be jealous Bobby Rapson, but I really can’t wait to see these guys again!

Oh hi, it’s Emily now! Like Jenny said, we are extremely excited about this opportunity. Our kitchen is ok, but our house was built in the mid-90s and our kitchen shows it! (and yes it disturbs me as much as it does you to realize that things from the mid-90s are now outdated – but it’s been 15 years!) I have been wanting new counter tops for, like, ever (or maybe three out of the four years we’ve lived in our house), and my husband has very strong (negative) feelings toward our cabinets, so we are both equally excited about the transformation our kitchen is about to undergo.

The best part? We don’t have to do any of it! (Well, except paint and change the light fixtures and put down a new floor – hey we might as well go for the gold, right?) Because people? We are not handy.

(Apparently I am parentheses-happy this morning, my apologies.)

So. Here’s what we’ve got to work with:

Eh.

As you can see (sort of, in the high-quality pics from my cell phone), our cabinets are oak-ish and have a distinct lack of hardware, which I do not enjoy, and our counter tops are run-of-the-mill vinyl. And our floor is awful (and also the bane of my existence, because it has 9 million groves per square inch that hold onto dirt for dear life. Any flooring companies out there who are dying to get in on this project, give me a call).

But in just a few weeks, it’s going to look entirely different, and it’s going to be awesome.

Since neither Jenny nor I see home decorating as our forte, I thought it would be fun to turn to you for advice as to what would look best in our kitchens! Please leave a comment letting us know what you think we should pick for our counters and cabinets (and if you could tell me what color to paint my walls, too, I would be eternally grateful. I am awful at picking out paint!). If you want to see what our options are, click over to the Granite Transformations website. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

  1. that’s so great! esp. the 3-4 days timeline. my parents had the kitchen redone when i was growing up and it was out of commission for like 6 weeks. we ate out almost every night for dinner. have fun! 🙂

  2. This is so awesome. I will not give you any advice, though, because I suck at decorating type stuff. You should see my house.

  3. congrats, brown tones are what my kitchen is done in.i know where you can get a good deal on flooring

  4. Emily – your kitchen is big an open so you have a lot of choices! I was looking at the:

    Trend Stone-Amarone

    Trend Mosaic-Excalibur

In one of the gallery pictures cabinets the site called summer flame

Pick 2 complimentary colors from the mosaic back splash for painting the walls and tile/ceramic floor.

    Jenny,

Trend Glass-Nero Maltese to add a “wow” when you 1st enter

Trend Glass-Cosmic to lighten up the backsplash and walls (smaller kitchen don’t want to fill shut in)

Cabinets-classic white with black hardware. this will make your current aplliances flow right in with the cabinets.

Paint-pick a light color out of the backsplash to paint the rest of the walls and than pick a slightly darker/bolder color to trim out the window trim. Would also pick a thick silk-fabric (CLEANS EASY) curtain with stainless or nickel (will match the backsplash) tie backs to open the curtains with another layer of lace curtains.

Just my 1st impressions-have fun. I would love to be able to do this in our house.

  5. I think you should save the paint choice for last, so you don’t limit your choices on picking out your cabinets and countertops. You could fall in love with something and be really bummed that you just went through the trouble of painting your walls and it doesn’t go with what you want to do. It is much easier to pick a paint that complements wood and granite than the other way around. I think I’m pretty good with colors, but I would have to see your kitchen choices, the rest of your house, and know your preferences before I could give you any input.

  6. you could pay tom in beer and rush CDs to help andy lay new tile. i will help you pick paint colors but i would cut off my own arm before i would do tile work again. seriously.

i think you should do a dark brown finish on your cabinets and a lighter color for your countertops. and then do a warm neutral paint color to accent both the counter tops and cabinets.

i am sooooo jealous! this is soooo cool!

  7. Very jealous here!
And frankly, Jenny, I thought the Garage Door was the “eyesore” of your home…have the Garage Door Salesmen seen that?

If not, they can see it on my blog… http://www.rednecklatte.com …shameless self-promotion – big surprise!

  8. Oh I love this! Decorating is one of my favorite hobbies! I would hate to choose things for you, because I feel your home should be a reflection of you, but I can give you some advice. So, I have some tips about how to make decorating decisions…

1st- Find your style. I subscribe to as many free home decor catalogues as I can or I check out the store websites and I find a picture or 2 of a style I really love, and I use that picture as a reference. If you like multiple styles, this can really help to reign you in.

2nd- Find one decor item you really love and want to use in your room- like a platter, dishes, wall art or storage containers, and use that items to pull colors from.

3rd- When choosing a wall color make sure that the color you choose does not clash with the other rooms that you can see from the room you are decorating. And remember that the colors do not have to match, they just need to coordinate.

Also, here is a list of some of my favorite home decor stores for you to check out, and help get you on your way:

*Home Goods (a.k.a. TJ Maxx)- they do not have their products on their website, so you will have to actually go to the store, but I ALWAYS find something great when I go there!
    *Pier One
    *Crate & Barrel
    *The Container Store
    *Pottery Barn
    *Restoration Hardware
    *Ballard Designs
    *Garndin Road
    *The Company Store
    *Z Gallery
    *West Elm
    *World Market
    *IKEA
    *Target

    Hope this helps! Good Luck!
